VGN-S360 - Upgrading the HDD...partition help....

I'm trying to get a WD 320GB drive to be fully recognized in this computer. XP SP3

From the reading I have learned that I need to break it into two partitions. Say 120GB and 200GB.

I have been trying to get this done with no luck.

With the new drive in an USB enclosure (windows saw the full 320gb)  I used UASEUS to create a disk image of the internal hard drive on the new hard drive. I partitioned the drive into two.

I then installed the new drive into the computer. It wouldn't boot.

I then just created a disk image of the old drive onto the new unpartitioned 320gb. Figuring I could just partition it when installed in the computer. It only recognized 137gb when installed in the computer.

Then I tried partitioning the new drive when it was in the enclosure. 120gb and 200gb. I then installed the blank partitioned drive into the computer. Booted off the Sony recovery DVD and did a fresh install. The recovery CD deleted my two partitions. So, when done it only showed 137gb.

I really think this is my failure to correctly partition the drive.

Do I make the 1st partition logical or primary? Do I make the second partition logical or primary?

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Won't work with this model. You can partition the drive, and it will not see more than 137GB due to the lack of 48-bit LBA support. When you use the recovery DVD it will look at the whole drive and carve out what it needs. Best thing is to partition the drive and use clean installation process - still this does not guarantee that it will see all partitions

I think you are right. I just tried setting one partition at 100gb and one at 200gb. I did this off of a bootable cd without windows booted and the new drive in a usb enclosure.

I then put the new drive in the computer and booted with the cd. It showed the first partition of 100gb and the second one as a bunch of numbers and that its was -357% used. I think I am pretty hosed.

Oh well at least I upgraded from 80gb to 137gb. Too bad it cost 90 bucks :/

Ouch laugh4.gif Get a 120GB and use this one as backup or sell it.

At this point I am done swapping drives in out and out of the computer. The 120gb is $65 and the 320 I bought was $89. So it would be a wash. Oh well....sometimes you win and sometimes you dont.

On the bright side the new fan is super quite. And the Artic Silver 5 I put on the cpu and gpu is making for a cooler running laptop. And the fan runs less!

headbang.gif It is a nice model series that Sony has. It should last you for bit longer still.
