Gway 7422gx (m6811) is there a way to faster optical??? better bios??? Thanks!

I've had this one for about 3 weeks now.  Fixed the screen flicker. Fixed overheating (pulled and cleaned HS and used ArcticSIlver 5).  Put in a WDScorpio Blue 250 eide drive for boot (128gb obviously).  XP SP3 Home w/o Gateway setup.  upgeade to 2x1gb sodimm.   I love it sufficiently that I am now secure cleaning my desktop for sale.

The DVD writer is slow.  I have tried several external units LG GP08, and a Sammy internal unit used externally with a usb/sata adapter and external power) but little difference - am I missing something?  I have had good success connecting a 3.5 internal externally...

Also, is there a better bios for this?

Thanks all!!!

Check the section out for this model - we have many threads regarding tweaking it (BIOS, drivers etc ...) Not sure about the slowness that you experience with the optical drive though

cheers ...

Hi and thanks for your time!

I appear to be able to get no more than 33MB/s out of my USB ports.  Probably limited by a 33MB IDE bus.

So I started wondering about firewire, but haven't brought that to fruition yet..

I ran into a pcmcia esata card, which gives me a max of 66MB/s - probably limited by FSB....

This works fine with a Sammy 0.5tb drive but then I started noticing that Acronis TI 2010 was running my poor 2.2gz (3400) cpu to death (100%), googled and noticed a bunch of complaints about that, googled again, found easeus todo free and am trying that (6 min to back up my C/system partition vs 1hr...). 30 min to DVD but gave me an error verifying it so shall try again.  Vastly easier on my poor cpu!!!!  Test is 5.0gb system partition that compresses to 2.something. Running XPSP3

If any thoughts on all that, would be appreciated!!!

BIOS - everything I read says, yeah, you can put 05 or 08, or other ones on there, but noone seems to be saying any improvement.  Probably limited by age of NB, SB.  But for $15 at goodwill, I'm not complaining!!!

Thanks again!

Easus back up error that you had could be caused by bad dvd medium. Try the latest EASEUS Todo Backup Free 2.5? Yeah, there is really not much difference between the 05 and 08 BIOS, we were just trying at the time to squeeze out performance with large ram and faster cpu, playing with the BIOS was the thing at the time for this very good machine, along with the eMachines M6xx series.

By the way, if you can , upgrade the OS to Windows 7 (64-bit even) and you'll be pleasantly surprised with the performance improvement on this old reliable machine wink.gif

and for $15 - well, I would just go celebrating laugh4.gif

I had win7 32 on the desktop for a long time, but just last month went back to xp, so I think I'll pass. That was a 3.5ghz, 4gb, 465gtx, diy machine...

I think I have 02 on this machine...  worth it to go to 05?

Thanks!

Any idea how? - all my searches have not yielded an answer.  I have 2 *.rom files.  I don't think winphlash would be any help...  Thoughts?

By the way, a different media worked fine for DVD for Easeus.

Thanks!

(found a ref to progbios.exe - now trying to locate it...)

winphlash works just fine. Relaible resources for the 7422gx and m6811 is here:

Yeah, fizi is where I got those rom files, and winphlash as well.

Just tried it and got the same prob I've seen recounted a number of times:  backs it up fine but when it gets down to the bottom item - flash the rom, it thinks for a few seconds and then powers the machine off.  still left with the 02 bios...

Thoughts?

Huge thanks for your time on this!!!!!!!

Thanks.

I did.

It did need it.

But still same issue - just shuts off when it gets to the flash task...

Done, but no difference...

Once, about 7 attempts ago, the first time I selected "update DMI AND BIOS and renew DMI", it took 26 seconds, and then rebooted - probably updated the DMI.  Did not update BIOS.  Hasn't done that since. Any specific settings in there that I should / should not use?

Huge thanks for your time!!!!!!!

Updating DMI can be normal (after a CMOS replacement) or abnormal - meaning your board configuration has been modified. Take a look at the board part number, I have the funny feeling that you would need another BIOS version or just live with the current one

It died 2 nights ago - little light indicating it's plugged in is on, but power button does nothing - doesn't light.  That was preceded briefly by it taking several pushes to turn in on, and sometimes the power button light would light and sometimes not.  Yes, tripple checked/re-seated the ribbon connection between the top strip with the buttons, and the mobo.  Don't know if due to being taken apart too many times, or my attempts to flash it.  RIP...

Absolutely, not too heavy on the spices though laugh4.gif

Seriously, search the Dell Section for baking or in the Sony Section. Last deal trying to revive a dead comp and you have nothing to lose
