Hey guys,

This is my first post. :) I'm in the market for a new gaming laptop, my price limit is ~$1400. Lower the better. I'm looking to play new demanding games such as Crysis 2, Starcraft 2 and other next-gen games on reasonably high settings. I move around quite a bit... so I need something semi-portable.

I have been looking at a couple of laptops and I was dead set on the Alienware m14x until I saw the Asus G73sw at BestBuy. So right now it is between the two. I'll consider others if they fit the bill better.

Must have specs:

6gb+ ram running at 1200+mhz

i7 2.0ghz+ overclocks 2.9+

Fast GPU (I am very unknowlegdable about them I just want it to be fast xD)

Asus G series 73sw (What's the best/cheapest model?)

Below are the specs of a Asus G73-a1(is this the one that the GPU is too close to the CPU?)

Go with the G74. The cooling improvements, keyboard, touchpad are improvements over the G73. 560M should also be noticable improvement over the 460M.

The M14X will be vastly more portable. The G73/G74 don't have optimus which the M14x does. This means M14x will also have twice the battery life. As for gaming, on lower res, you should be able to play the games you listed easily with the M14x. Certainly better on the G74, but M14x will do what you want.

Can you play your games on your current system now? If so, then do that. Wait til next year. Everything this year is just rehashed old crap from two years ago for both AMD and Nvidia. 40nm slight improvements. Next year will be a 28nm new architecture and all the rumors are indicating the new models from both with be MUCH FASTER than what is available now.

If you can wait a year, I'd do that. If you can't, go with the G74. But like I said, G74 is just a G73 with a new skin, the performance gain over a G73jh, my almost 2 year model will be maybe 7-10% faster, which is not enough for upgrading for me for example. I'll wait another year.
