Dell Precision M90 Graphics Card replacement

Thread Starter

Hi - I know there are some threads already posted about this issue but they seem to be 3+years old.

My graphics card has given up on my M90. I've read mixed reports saying that it is possible to replace the card on this spec. and other threads saying that you'd need to replace the entire motherboard.

If its possible to replace it....

1.What is the best suited card that I can use that is currently being manufactured ?

2.Can anyone point me in the way of a tutorial that shows/gives instructions to physically uninstall the old one and replace the new one (I recently took the laptop apart to clean the heatsinks and fans and the chip/card seems like its fixed on permanently).

If its not possible to replace the card is it for the trash or would it be worth my while selling it for parts ?

Thanks for your time....

Dell Suport site has the most well written guides for the dissassemby of your model. Try to stick (if you can get one) with the original GPU model. And if you not find one, you propably can try to bake the old card and extend the life for some more time

Hey just baked it and applied some thermal grease.

It didn't work the first two times but there are less and less dots on screen at startup each time I bootup and now 10 bootups later it seems to work fine. Thanks for the help.

NIce to hear. If you bake again next time, just make sure that you DO NOT move (touch) the card until at least 40-60 minutes after turning off the oven

One last question - if the GPU starts to become poor again can it be re-baked and if so is there a limit (approx.) as to the number of times you will get away with re-baking ?

You can bake away as many times as you want. Noone knows for sure about a limit on baking GPU or motherboard. It will tell you when it has enough sauna laugh4.gif My recommendation is going easy with the device. Don't run any apps that pushes the card to the limit, try to tweak it so the whole system looks at it as a weaker card

If you would like to recycle your old graphic card, you're welcome to send it to us ( we can afford shipping costs ).
