Granddaughter cannot access her 1TB external harddrive...I suspect that it has crashed..I am looking at it for her and.the drive shows up in Windows Explorer but does not show any data on it..Does anyone have a recommendation for third party recovery software

Boot up Linux and see if you can access the files

No go, hooked it up to the Pinguy linux netbook and it sees the drive but cant get it to spill the contents. I had found a free program called Easeus data recovery and it had scanned for approx 2 hrs and found 25 thousand ish files but had only been about 20% complete..didnt want to leave it running while sleeping, so stopped the scan and will retry again this am...She had baby pics, camera videos (baby) and recorded some movies on the external drive...I think she recorded one too many movies and plugged the drive up and now the way it is, there is no access...hoping this program when finished will identify very large files and I can delete a couple of them (probably movies) and free up some space and therefore gain access again....crossing fingers

Can always use the charlatan approach of leaving the HDD in the freezer for about 10-20 minutes, and pray hard winknudge.gif

cheers ...

If it's Wd essentials or passport you may be able to download firmware for the drive to be able to read it, it may have been powered down incorrectly

Used a program called Easeus data recovery 5.1 yesterday for the 640GB external drive...It took 13 hours for it to complete it scan...When completed, it gave the option to check which files you want to save..as mentioned, I was most interested in just the photos and vid camera shots..moved my cursor over the boxes, and the program froze..couldnt do anything..had to physically power down the laptop and of course, lost the results of the scan..so, I will give it one more shot to day...if it works, fine, if not, its back to the granddaughter and she can try sending it in
