Hi, everybody. My IBM ThinkPad R40 has been my trusty laptop for way too long. I don't travel much anyway, and the acquisition of an iPad has reduced my need to bring the laptop. (However, when the laptop did work, I brought both.)
Recently, I started getting the dreadful "Fan error" and two beeps on boot, then a shutdown. Clearly the fan is the problem, so I went and ordered a used fan and heatsink assembly. No problem right? Here are pics of the new one. (click pictures for full size views- warning, though: 12MP, that's 4000x3000)
It came with screws and everything. However, I'm having issues taking the old one out. I can't tell what type of screwdriver I need, and I tried these two:
...but neither let me unscrew the screws on the fan/heatsink. The yellow one is too big and the black/red one is too small. I don't know the size of either.
What are the size Phillips screwdrivers that I need? I guess to help, here are some pics of the assembly screwed to the laptop's mainboard.
Also, do I *need* thermal paste, judging from the pictures of the heatsink? I'm pretty sure I will, but before I purchase some I wanna make sure.
