SWAP space - do I really need twice my RAM

Thread Starter

I have 8 gigs of RAM (4 of it I do not use... lawl).

I bought a new HDD (Seagate 1TB) and am now wanting to dualboot Linux on it.

I'll be using Ubuntu, and with 1TB of space, I can be as generous as I need to be.

But would 10GB be too much? Some say you don't even need more then 512mb but that just seems so... small.

ALSO, can I use the same SWAP partition between two Distros? Say... Ubuntu and Fedora as those are the two best distros IMO...

I think way back I had 10GB SWAP because I read that you needed 5GB but now when I look at other forums - everyone has their own rule of thumb.

I would just leave the swap space to OS handling. Why bother if you have enough disk space on the drive? Let the system gets what it needs, it might be less than your generosity laugh4.gif

cheers ...

10Gb is a lot, as qhn said leave it up to the OS... You can alter it anyway using Gparted (partition editor)....

one thing you do want to keep in mind is that if you plan on having Hibernation active the swap space should be at least the size of your physical RAM (because it has to dump the entire RAM contents to the swap). if you're not planning on using that, then it doesn't matter so much
