upgrading an Asus x50n. and Hello!

Thread Starter

Hello all! I've just registered for the forums/site here.

I have an Asus x50n that is a few years old now (specs below) still in its 'off the rack' condition. I've been thinking about upgrading it and just wanted to check that my plans aren't silly. Any comments and feedback will be appreciated!

I currently have 2GB RAM and I want to get it to 3GB or preferably 4GB RAM.

Currently I am running Windows Vista home 32 bit, so I know (well, believe) that the maximum RAM is 2GB. Therefore, I am planning on upgrading the OS to windows vista 64 bit edition (either home, ultimate or whatever breaks the bank the least)

The bios is version 211, so I think that may need upgrading also. Is that straightforward to do? The processor is 64 bit compatible (see specs)

As I currently have only a ~120 GB HDD I'm going to upgrade that too.

So, any helpful suggestions on upgrading will be very appreciated!

Many thanks and all the best,

Thom

The first thing I would do is to make sure you can find drivers for each component of your notebook BEFORE upgrading. A lot of times people update their OS to win7 in a notebook and the drivers are not available.

You should have no issue running Windows 7 64-bits on this comp. Few things to consider_

. going to a 64-bit OS does not mean that you would be able to expand the memory to more than 2GB (current max for this model)
. GPU driver will be constraint to the one made available from Microsoft Windows 7 update (which is not bad)

cheers ...

Many thanks for your thoughts on this. I had heard mention that there was a 2GB cut off but had assumed that it was from the OS rather than the model itself - very glad I checked with you first instead of just jumping in blindly!

check http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20090613213835956&board_id=3&model=X50N&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

I also have x50n but with Athlon TK-53. I don't know if it is true but SiSoftware Sandra shows that my motherboard can handle 8GB:

Computer Memory Controller

Number of Memory Slots : 2
Maximum Installable Memory : 8GB

Maximum Memory Speed : 2x 400MHz (800MHz)

Has anyone tried that before?

First of all, I'd like to say that I have the same laptop only it currently has a 120GB HD, and 4GB RAM running Windows 7 64bits.

The most important thing you should before you upgrade to Windows 7 is to copy the motherboard drivers into de harddisk to have them available after the install. (Learn't it the hard way)

Best of luck

P.S. I'd like to know if anyone has been able to install 8GB
