Aspire 5050 wireless issues

Thread Starter

Hello, I've been messing with my girlfriend's notebook, an acer aspire 5050.

so far its been running fine on a totally clean install of windows 7. Aside from a couple minor driver related issues it has been showing promise.

SO I decided to upgrade the ram and hopefully get a little more performance out of it. And now the wireless internet refuses to turn on. I've been searching and cant find any driver related issues. The light by the switch on the front of the notebook is on, and device manager claims it is working properly.

Any ideas? Help and suggestions cheerfully received.

Thanks

Cant imagine how upgrading RAM would affect wireless...unless you opened the wrong access panel and opened the mini-wireless card access panel instead and now it may need reseating

The wireless card is in the same panel as the RAM. I'll see if reseating it helps. I've reinstalled and updated drivers, tried every control panel I can think of, and still no luck.

thanks

Open it up and check it again, you probably knocked something loose or shorting it

cheers ...

One of the wireless mini pci card retaining clips may have become dislodged and the card needs reseating

Ok I tried reseating the card, checked the antenna wires, switch on the front is on, indicator is on, but in network window and windows mobility thing it shows as off, with no option to turn on.

see how its greyed out? Also device manager shows the driver updated and claims the device is working properly.

I'm baffled and a little frustrated. could the card or the switch be bad? If the switch then how can I bypass it?

Just want to get this straight...you said: "SO I decided to upgrade the ram and hopefully get a little more performance out of it. And now the wireless internet refuses to turn on."
Are we talking..the wireless is working and you immediately upgrade your RAM and after the laptop is reassembled, the wireless is not working...or were there other things happening during tht time

To clarify: Everything was working finn reae, I shut it down, opened it, installed new RAM. I then reassembled and booted up and the wireless wouldnt turn on.

To update.... YAY I found the fix here in the forums.

seems the switch gave up. But masking pin 20 worked like a champ and I'm connected right now.

I must have bumped or dropped or done somthing to the switch
