So I am assuming you are seeing yellow question marks under the device manager's audio device?

I have no question marks under "Sound, Video and game controllers"

I have it only on Other Devices>Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus.

Is there a physical volumne control on the side of the notebook or at the base of the LCD?

If not,

try these drivers

http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-022034.htm

I think you want the Mobile Intel® 945GMS Express Chipset drivers

No there isnt.Only option is keyboard Fn (Function key) and PgUp,PgDn to change volume.

But this is not the problem.Problem is the driver.

Intel drivers for Mobile Intel® 945GMS Express Chipset, the 82801GBM is actually just the controller hub of the 945GMS.

When I said to go here: http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-022034.htm

click on Download listed under Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility. then on the next page that opens choose your operating system and click GO, then on the next page that opens download driver 2 (2455KB) to your desktop then install it.

Information on the chipset audio driver is located here;

Browse through the section for High Definition Audio under XP - you would need a tweaked KB888111 patch before you can even install the audio driver with XP SP3

You have 2 error messages. one regarding the modem device on high definition bus. This can be solved by using the correct modem driver. There are a few drivers for modem on the support site, which one have you tried so far? If you tried a few of them, did you completely un-install the previous before out in the next one?

The audio issue is known with XP SP3, the tweaks shown above work 99% of the time.

May I suggest that you try to re-install the whole system from scratch (again) - with chipset drivers, then modem driver, then the rest, and stopping at SP2 first - and see if any difference?

cheers ...
