GPU upgradeability

Thread Starter
how upgradeable is a modern notebook if it can support a 2 GPU (sli configuration) 580M? will I be able to install a better one later?
It's possible. Notebooks are made somewhat upgradable but it's hard to find cards that fit certain chassis. Nothing is every 100% in the notebook world.

Graphics cards are notoriously difficult to upgrade in notebooks. Unless you KNOW it's upgradable via MXM or a brand-proprietary standard, you can pretty much guarantee that it's not.

how can I check whether a notebook is MXM compatible?

Simple rule - if the notebook of the same model is being offered with different GPU configuration then you have a high likelihood that the comp is being fitted with MXM cards winknudge.gif

that is the case smile.gif it has a choice of 5 gpu combinations, 2 of them SLI.

Curious why you are going for an SLi notebook.

Why not stick with a single GPU config?

to have it last longer, and support more games. is it a bad idea?

SLI combination is not recommended then?

It a lot of cases, SLi configs will LOWER your frame rates and not incraese them.

why is that? games don't support them?
Drivers tend not to support notebook cards in SLI or crossfire so it can be a little odd in some games as the drivers and cards struggle in this configuration they wernt meant for.

the laptop is a XMG U700 ULTRA Shenker/mysn.de with a choice of ATI and nVidia 560M/580M GPU with possible SLI , does this help in telling whether it's a MXM notebook or not?

EDIT: answer from the vendors:
Quote:
as I told you, we can’t guarantee that the U700 will receive any upgrade beyond the current generation GPUs. It will support the new Radeon HD 6990M however, that’s already confirmed.

But I need to advisse you: if you want a GPU upgrade in the future we can’t take your old GPU back, you have to sell it your self if you want to save money.

Also you can’t just buy any GPU from a 3rd party vendor, it needs to have a VBIOS designed to work with the barebone. Interoperability in the MXM standard is limited to whether the VBIOS recognizes the mainboard/outlets.
was this actually all known beforehand/foreseeable?can it be solved?

Yes indeed the G970X is based on MXM so it will support future GPU cards.

I think that the vendors answered you correctly as far as how far upgrade-ability can go for that particular model. With MXM cards one can be swimming in the whole slew of mud since not all manufacturers stay with the same standard measurement -- and holes in the card (lot of tweaks here before for many users swapping out different GPU MXM cards) winknudge.gif

Not from here, but they have been around for quite a while. Everything should be good. Why don't you give us your personal opinion on them when you have time?
