after op install will not boot up right

I have now reinstalled windows xp, installed all the asus drivers, etc.  One of the things I installed was the live update.  It popped up with some updates so I told it to have at it.  The last thing it did was update the bios.  There were directions, I followed the directions.   Now, everytime I boot it comes back with the last time was not shut down properly how do you want to boot.  I tried safe mode, last know good, etc. and they all failed which leads me to believe that the problem was the bios update (which always makes me a little nervous.  When it was done, however, it took me to the bios so I looked around and everything seemed ok.  My current bios is: ASUS 1005HA BIOS revision 1601, Core Version: 1601, build date: 54/18/11, EC Firmware Version: EPCD-037

My thought is to goto asus and download this exact same bios update and do it again but would feel better if anybody had any thoughts on this one.

Thank you.....................

Thank you for the reply.

I would love to run chkdsk but I cannot boot up to get to chkdsk.  I could also remove the drive and do that on another machine.  I would have to take the machine apart, yet again, and I already have some problems with screws breaking, etc.   I did, however, run chkdsk before I formatted the drive.  I think I am doomed to simply start over and, this time, be a LOT more careful about reading my screen <g>

Thanks again.........

I started giving my problem some thought and checked the bios yet again.  This time I paid attention.  The live update cleverly updated the SATA configuration to AHCI which, then, cleverly, fixes the machine so that it can no longer recognize the hard disk, even though the BIOS does.  I switched the SATA configuration back to IDE and now my machine is working again.  One can only wonder?
