Acer Ethos 5943g keys problem- CapsLock, S, D, G, H, M dont work

Hello, and please HELP!

Since last couple of weeks I've experienced pretty strange problem- some keys dont function at all (CapsLock, S, D, G, H, M) and suddenly they work again. Firstly it seemed to me that dysfunctioning of these keys was occassionally, but now it is most definitely opposite- they work just occassionally. Sometimes I need to press some of them for infinite time, and suddenly all of them start to work, and sometimes not. Solutions offered in 'net are related mostly to hardware problems (from dirt under keys to broken some of the parts of keyboard) or driver reinstallations. I didnt understand proper steps for updating driver for keyboard for my laptop, since specified "keyboard driver" doesnt exist. I am not experienced in updating these drivers such are for motherboard, etc., so I dont want to experiment. Problem with cleaning of keys doesnt seem to me as relevant, since I clean surface on regular basis; also some mechanic damage is out of question. Only thread which is pretty much related to this problem is this:

http://forums.techguy.org/games/979650-keyboard-problem.html

Only thing is that I dont have problem with mouse. With or without external mouse this problem still exists.

Can someone give me useful advice?

THX!

. Would it work correctly with an external keyboard?
. If yes, you might want to remove the keyboard and reinstall it and see if any improvements; if not then the keyboard might be failing

maybe liquid spill or possibly a firmware problem. However, I don't see any update or issues with this model listed on the website.

I've found the same problem on my Aspire 5943G (running with Ubuntu 10.04) since two weeks ago.  These keys (Caps Lock, S, D, G, H, M) stop responding all of sudden and may work again after a few minutes.  Reboot the laptop can fix the problem right away, but it may happen again a moment later.  It happens probably once or twice in a day.  Just called for Acer's online support, but they told me that they haven't got similar problem report from the other users.  I am asked to send my laptop to the local service center for a check up.

I wonder if by taking the keyboard out and even the CMOS battery would fix the issue

I guess some other persons could have pretty much the same problem, and it is not matter that ACER "didn't knew about this issue", they must know and find solution for it, I guess. They told me the same.
Actually, I am thinking that this issue with keys could have something to do with regular windows 7 updates. Or with some of installed programs recently. Definitely I am sure that this is not pure hardware problem. But, still, I don't know how to solve it.
No I didn't try to connect ext keyboard, but I will, when I found one.

Keep trying to find solution for this annoying problem with keyboard?
Thx.smile.gif

I have got the exact same problem within the last month or so and it is annoying as hell.

I contacted Acer and the only advice they could give was to do a full recovery of the computer  :-(  but it is strange that 6 keys wont work on this computer. If you are wondering then Yes I have plugged in an external keyboard with USB and all the keys are working on this and I have tried to remove the "acer keyboard" driver and install it again but without any improvements.

Hope someone can figure this out!

Thanks in advance!

I sent my laptop back to Acer's service center for a check up last week.  They did not take time for through investigation but just replaced the keyboard.  I haven't seen the problem since then.  So apparently it was a hardware (or connector) failure.

Hi did you manage to find a solution to this problem? I am not keen to give to the service center as they take a massive 14 working day!

Actually i have the same problem with my 5943G i bought september 2010 in KL! After abou 10 months start problem with missing letters and when visit Acer service center they told it was a hardware problem and replace keyboard unit in September last year covered by warranty (Take some time because a stay in a privince in Philippines and must order from abroad and then via main ofiice and ....)! Since then everything works just fine until now! Start again with missing ctrl key!! Can not cut and paste anymore with keyboard and when i try ctrl + alt + delete just ask if i want to delete that file or folder i was in! Very annoying! The mouse pad has been little strange lately as well! Very sensitive and easy make double click instead of singel klick and when hover the mouse sometimes get wild and start use zoom funktion etc etc! I will talk with the local service center later and see what they say! Not covered by warranty anymore but seems to me this is a bad unit from the beginning! Until then i use my USB keyboard and mouse with no problem!

I've got the same issue - and my notebook was sent to repair where they replaced the harddisk, but now 2 weeks later, the same problem with capslock, sdghm, begins again! Acer is now telling me that it could be some sort of software conflict, but that it has to go back to repair again.. jesus.. anyone had any luck solving the problem??

No way I have encountered this EXACT problem, same keys on my Acer 5943g, on bootup they wont work and after a few mins they just come alive again. Ive had the laptop just over 14 months, never had a droplet of liquid on the keyboard or anything.

Very strange its the same keys as the guy who started this thread.. im thinking a manufacturers defect??

I'm having exactly the same issue with my Acer aspire 5943g laptop. Keys CapsLock,S,D,G,H,M activate after pressing one of those keys pressed down for 10 minutes. However the deactivate if you don't press them within 5 minutes. I've also had problems with backspace, enter, ö,apostrophe and down&right arrows, but these keys eventually started to work for now.

I strongly believe this problem is acer's fault, because almost every 5943g owner has somekind of issues with these keys in their laptops. I think acer's factories might have produced faulty keyboards like this. External keyboard works fine, but I'm still going to contact acer about this annoying issue.

I have exactly the same problem. Does anyone found a solution?

So far we have one concrete solution in the thread - replacing the keyboard

Hello everyone,

I'm sorry to say that replacing the keyboard is not the definitive solution. I have an Acer Aspire Ethos 5943G too, I have sent my pc in warranty and after a long month I have received it back: They changed basically half of the computer, keyboard included. I thought in the beginning that the problem was solved, but after two weeks...here we are! The problem is the same: some keys don't work and when I succeed to activate one key, also the other ones start to work as well. Unfortunately this solution is temporary, after some minutes the keyboard won't work again. At this point we can't say that the problem is not related to the hardware, we can just say that doesn't depend on the physical keyboard. It's also probable that a bios update can solve the problem, but I think that Acer is not so interested in its customers...very sad :(

cheers...
