Urgent Help required!!! M17x problem: Display driver has stopped responding error

Hi everyone,

i'm having a issue with my M17x R1 which is driving me mad!

every few minutes my system hangs up, the screen goes black and i get the error message that the nvidia display driver has stopped responding and has been recovered.

This happens mostly when im browsing (hasn't happened even once when i play games on it!)

and some times it does not get recovered and i have to power my system off.

i have a single gtx 260m and the driver version is 280.26 (the latest release available. plus the error was present when i had 275.33 installed as well)

All other drivers are fully updated, i have never tampered or opened the laptop (except for cleaning the fans).

I'm running a fresh install of windows 7 x64

bios version is also the latest one (A07)

would really appreciate the support!

This is the same problem I've been having for ages. It comes and goes, sometimes it happens more frequently than other times. I'm pretty sure it's something to do with flash content, but I've never been able to figure out how to fix the damn thing. I've clean installed windows and gotten a new video card, tried different drivers etc. Same Shit, Different Day.

Sometimes mine does the black screen thing sometimes it just straight up freezes.

I've also googled into the problem but haven't found any real answers.

i have rolled back to A03 bios (vga drivers are same).

now the frequency of this error has reduced a lot (haven't received any errors for a day or so)

but now it randomly locks up time to time.

plus now i have a new problem: my laptop stops detecting my wifi connection and hangs up; i have to poweroff my system. when my system restarts it doesnot detect my wifi connection!!! It is showing other wifi networks in my area and the wifi is working fine on my other asus laptop! and when it does it fails to connect when authorization password is entered.

then i have to uninstall the adapter and reboot the system, reinstall the adapter and then it works fine then!

Any chance for a clean re-installation?

It's crazy that you say that, that's the exact same thing that would happen to me. Would show a bunch of other networks but not mine! I had my video card and WIFI card replaced. Haven't had the wifi problem for a while now, but all these little problems are not that frequent so you never know when they're gonna happen. I've had more than 1 clean re-install.

Hello, i used R1 before - troubles with non-responding driver or hang up-s are common for this model. You need disable pci-ex 2.0 feature in graphics subsection of the bios. Works like a charm for me ( 260GTX SLI ) and my brother with single GTX280. Hope it helps you too. Also such freezes can be result of overheating - but my notebook freezes and at low temp ( i used riva tuner software for monitoring ), sorry for my bad enlish i'am from Russia.

Upd: Broadcomm wifi troubles in most cases resolved by disabling "turn off device to save power" feature on NVIDIA LAN adapter, i'am simple replaced broadcomm card with intel one - thank god  half size WiFi mini pci-ex was easy to get in my location.

thanks a lot for the input

will try it. hope it works cause im really p***ed at my m17x because of these random and frequent problems.

overheating is not an issue imo (for the cpu and gpu) because the temps remain well below 65c when the system hangs-up

Did you mean "PCIE Gen2" ? that's all I could find under graphics.

Yes m8, i mean "PCIE Gen2" - sold my R1 more than year ago and don't remember exactly how it's written.

So far no freezes, I believe that fixed it. I love you forever.

thank you maxsl, you the man. it's been 3 days and i didn't get a single crash, freeze or blank or funny colors ever since i disable my pcie gen2 from the bios following your guide. previously a week of crash or freeze of my m17x equals to my whole life usage of computer crash on any other nb or pc. you make my day man.....a big appreciation for your help. even my osd are starting to getting functioning normally with occasionally not launching after start up which i can load it easily from the shortcut i created to my desktop.

pls make this solution sticky as a lot of aw m17x are having this issue and being live with it. even dell doesn't have a solution to it. i may not know what effect it may cause by disable the pcie gen2 but at least it saves you from frequent freeze or crash or blank screen as it comes at anytime and it happen even during light usage like browsing and watching movies. mine system runs on 280 sli and i believe it worked on every m17x system. i'm using the latest bios a07 and the latest nvidia drivers form nvidia instead of dell as advice by their technical support but still facing with frequent crash/freeze/blank prior to disable the pcie gen2.

Why not - done:)

Hi Everyone,

A bit of an old post, but I was hoping someone would help me.

Im having pretty much the same issue with my M17xR3 running Nvidia GTX 580m.

Every so often the machine just freezes, sometimes in apps, sometimes in desktop

sorry about the noob question,

but how do I get to the "Graphics Section" of the BIOS...? i dont ave that tab, (only main, advanced , wireless, security and exit )

I think im running the latest drivers

thanks in advance

I don't think that Dell makes available "Graphic Section" in its BIOS for the m17x R3 model
