I have a gateway laptop m-6750 and one day the screen when gray then different shades of gray. When I plug in an external monitor it works fine. Is it the motherboard or video inverter or something else? I just want to be sure when I buy the replacement part that I purchase the correct item. Anyone seen this before?

I don't think it is the LCD itself. The only reason I say that is after I turn it on and off the screen always lights up and sometimes I see a light residual image of what I believe is the last page it showed when working. But moreover I turn it on its gray, turn off then back on it shows the screen in three blocks different shades of gray then as the computer boots completed with windows turned on it finally goes to a little gray then like 7-8 inches of colored lines then more gray, but it doesn't stick to just one color. Makes me think the LCD is fine just might be the inverter or video chip on the motherboard. Just trying to narrow it down before I start buying parts...
