Upgrading an XPS 15 (l501)

I bought an xps 15 with the 2.53ghz dual core processor, core i5. It seems like some of the I7 processors might be on a different socket, so they won't fit. Has anyone put in another processor on theirs?

what I have found is any Dual core processor will work (that includes the on board GPU) but upgrading to a quad core did not work for me.

I upgraded mine from and I3 to a I5,

i tried the 720QM but it did not boot.

I believe they used a different motherboard for the quad core CPU's

I think there maybe a few I7 CPUS (Dual Core) that will work, but it will take careful research.

Good Luck

Cheers

Thanks for sharing and it makes sense if the quads are all on a different socket. The only strange thing is that yours fit. Looking over the available cpu's it doesn't seem like there is a whole lot of difference in the speeds. I wonder if I would just be better off leaving it as it is.

Absolutely, an i5 CPU is right up there for performance already

cheers ...

I think the biggest difference is the on board GPUs are faster as you go from the I3 to I5 to I7
