M17X R1 GRAPHICS CARD COMPATABILITY...

Thread Starter
hello, i am a proud owner of a m17x r1 purchased from dell outlet where the touch control buttons didnt even light up or work right out of the box.. instead of dealing with dells worthless tech support i fixed it my self by purchasing the power strip ribbon from ebay from a seller in thailand.. i am not going to spend hours on the phone with dells tech support just to be told something i already know.. now every thing works fine.. sorry for the ranting but my question is will a ATI 5870 gpu from a r2 model work in the r1??? will the bios recognize it.. would it recognize a nvidia gtx 285?? any help would be great.. thanks...headscratch.gif

It might have a better chance recognizing the nVidia than with the ATI. Dave can give you better idea when he is here.

I suspect r1 has MXM 2.x connector and r2 MXM 3.x - they are totally different. But I'm not sure.

M17x have mxm3.0b connector type. 5870 will go with A05 bios or later ( i seen such config personally). Will not go in CF. Not sure about 285gtx. So 4870 in CF or gtx280 in SLI will be better choice then single 5870.

Imo, much better switch to cheapest possible( in GPU part ) R2 for future upgrade to 2x 6970 - that was my choice since i'am totally confused with R3 and M18x.

You fools!

There are 3 different m17x. NOT counting the r2

There is 1 m17, originally with 4870 or 3870... MXM 2.1

2 Area 51 m17x, with 9800m GT SLI... also MXM 2.1

And 3 the DELL m17x r1 with 260m SLI & 4870 CF... MXM 3.0 !!! This is what the OP has! and NO it does NOT do better with Nvidia cards, the newer nvidia cards are totally different from older ones. 560m for example works only with external monitor. All newer Nvidia cards have problems with built in display.

The 5870 does work in the Dell m17x r1. You need to flash both cards to a master vBIOS. You'll have to find the thread over at Notebookreview for help/
