Problem with Touch Pad on Acer Aspire -

Grrrr.  Basically, my touchpad and scroll keys don't work!!

I was running P'Shop and had F'fox in the background and both of them stop responding.  I got into taskmanager and was able to close F'fox but P'Shop refused to close.  So, in frustration I just turned the power off. Reboot, I chose safe mode, which then also froze... before pulling out my hair I just turned the switch off again; it then rebooted just fine - except the touchpad no longer works!!!  (I am currently using a plug-in mouse)

I reinstalled the driver - no good.  I tried a restore point - nothing... except a message "...failed to restore C:\Windows with original file... and "Unspecified error occured 0x80071a90

I got into the System Configuration under Admin tools in the control panels and under the Startup tab I see the Synaptic row ticked but the Command field shows - %ProgramFiles%\Synaptics\SynTP\blah blah.exe

Everything else in the Comand column show C:\ blah blah...

Anyone have any idea how to get the touch pad to work again?!?! All was fine until I thigns froze and I rebooted.

TIA,

chkdsk, defrag, uninstall the device in devices manager and let the system trying to re-install it, system repair ... in that order

by the way, the simplest way to perform a chkdsk is to go the drive properties (explorer, right click on the drive) then choose "tools" - use the "error checking" option, save and restart the system

... it took a couple of attempts but it seemed to have done the trick, thanks, qhn!  It did get stuck on the chkdsk but somehow, the next attempt did it.  Don't know what happened in the first place but glad its performing as it should!

Cool. I recommend that you make a good system back up, keeping a close eye on it. Eventually the drive might be failing
