To wait or not to wait, that is the question

Hello! I was wondering if you experts out there could give me a little advice! You see, I am in the martket for an Alienware Area51m...but I don't know whether I should buy it now or wait a few months and see what happens in terms of the prices going down on the Extreme Edition processors as well as other components in the computer. Does anyone know if Intel or ATI/Nvidia will be releasing any new mobile processors/graphics cards any time in the next 4-6 months? The reason is, I don't want to be beating myself up because I bought a laptop and a month later its already somewhat outdated. Thanks in advance for replies!

With that kind of reasoning, you're going to be waiting forever. Something better is always right around the corner...you just gotta decide if/when you wanna take the chanceyou don't have to bet yourself up if you buy a 51m...they're upgradable. I dont think we'll be seeing any dramatic changes in the next few months, not from AW anyway. They just released the 9700/5700, so in a way, now is a good time to buy because you can get the most out of current tech, and then upgrade when something better comes along...maybe throw a 4GHz P4 in at the end of the year....or the r420 mobility gpu. Point is...you gotta commit sometime, and if the price drops...take it in stride and know that you got to enjoy your lappie longer than the folks that are still waiting.

I was wondering if the current motherboards in the Area51m's are upgradeable to the 4 ghz P4 and also the r420 gpu? Or am I going to need to buy a completely new motherboard. You make very good points. Thank you.

At this point, availability of either is purely speculation. The 4GHz may physically fit, if Intel keeps the same socket design, but it might not work correctly due to power consumption or heat issues. The r420 was just released for the desktop, the mobility versions have yet to be described at all, to my knowledge. There just isn't enough info available on either product to answer that question fully. Some believe that the r420 generation of gpus will be the last upgrade for the current 51m's, but I think there will be one or two more after that.

So basically what you're saying is that the Area 51m is not going to be upgradeable? So would it be best to wait until a new mobo and processor come out since it is getting close to the transition period already?
