Acer Extensa 5510z Video Problem

Hello, My name is Joe and I recently joined the forum.

I have a problem with the following Acer laptop. When you turn the laptop on the lights light up all ok and the laptop boots, but the screen starts off with being completely white and then it gradually starting from the top left corner it turns black.

If you connect and external monitor as soon as you boot up you get red vertical lines about 1/2 inch thick every 1/2 inch, you then get the Acer Logo screen, but this has 3 green vertical lines close together again roughly every 1/2 inch, then when it gets to the post bios screen it goes back to the red vertical lines on the black background.

Hope someone can help in identifying what is causing this.

TIA

Joe

Are you seeing these "3 green vertical lines close together again roughly every 1/2 inch" on the external or on the notebook LCD itself? I am not quite clear reading the description

cheers ...

Hi thanks for the reply, yeah the green lines and the red lines are showing on the extenal monitor. If I dont plug in the external monitor and power it on, the Notebook LCD shows a completely white screen and then it gradually fades black.

The external monitor works ok cause when I connect to my desktop it shows all ok.

Thanks,

Joe

It looks like a failed GPU (Graphics Proccessing Unit) (Vid chip) on the motherboard and as these are not readily replaceable (GPUs), it pretty much necessitates a complete motherboard replacement
