Acer Aspire won't connect to my Sprint 4G Hotspot

Thread Starter

I have an older Acer Aspire and I recently bought the Sprint 4G hotspot device and I can't get my Aspire to connect wirelessly to it. It shows that I am connected to the internet with it but I can't browse to any websites so it's not really connected. Does anyone know what I have to do to get it to connect to my Sprint 4G hotspot device?

Thanks...

Have you programmed the device?

I'm not sure which device you're referring to but --  my Sprint 4G hotspot device has been setup and is currently working fine with my Toshiba Notebook.  I was trying to connect my Aspire to it since the hotspot device can handle 4 or 5 connections at once. I've configured my Aspire network settings as best I can to connect to it and it shows it's connected yet I can't browse. I'm wondering if the Sprint 4G Hotspot is using a wireless protocol that my Aspire doesn't support?

If you are connected to the Hot Spot then the protocol is correct. How many devices are being connected to it at the moment? All wireless?

If you leave just the Acer connected, will internet work?

Sprint 4G Firmware up to date?

Check out the connection type on your Sprint 4G also - not sure which one to try but one of these settings will cause the issue of "connected but not allowing browsing"

The Sprint 4G unit is 2 months old so it's up to date. I took it into the Sprint service center and they verified it was working correctly and up to date.  They also tried to connect the Aspire to it but could not, so they gave up. I'm about to give up as well. I thought I'd try this forum as a last resort.

My Toshiba Notebook is the only other device connected to the sprint 4G hotspot unit.

I've tried to connect the Acer only to the Sprint 4G but the results are the same -- no real connection despite is saying it is connected with a strong signal. I suspose it is hopeless if Sprint couldn't get it to work with their 4G wifi unit.  BTW, when I was at the Sprint service center, my aspire connected to the Star Buck wifi that was next door ok and worked fine. I just cannot get it to connect to the Sprint 4G wifi and neither can Sprint!! :-(

Are you using any wireless manager software (other than just leaving the wireless connection management to Windows) on the Acer?

No, I just using winXP to manage the wireless connection on the Acer...

I would try flushing the DNS cache on the Acer next, if you have not done so

Yeah, the Sprint service center did that when they were trying to fix this problem...

We can always try updating the wireless driver on the notebook or using another version. Post here what is your current driver version. And also try to remove the wireless device within devices manager and let Windows re-installing it

Is that still advisable even when the Acer wifi works fine with Starbucks wifi network? Wouldn't that indicate the wifi card in the acer is working ok?

There are instances where the notebook can access and connect to certain wireless connections and not to others - HP notebooks are notorious for this with their wireless cards. It all boils down to drivers issue and wireless card firmware, and in some cases, a need to replace the wireless card (to a better one) all together
