I have a couple of questions:
1) wondering if Dell still designs their laptops, the XPS line at least, in the manner they did the original XPS. Specifically, Dell seemed at the time to design their laptops in such a manner that the user could swap out many broken parts covered under warranty, such as the Keyboard and Screen. I'm wondering if Dell still designs in this manner.
why? I bought my kids some cheap Asus laptops and a couple weeks ago one broke their screen (along with they've broken some keys off). When i dropped the laptop off at the store it was bought from, it was gone for 2 wks, more than a full week just to get the display replaced, and the keyboard is still on order.
One of the reasons I chose Dell in 2004 was the CC warranty service, and it did not disappoint at that time, so I'm partial to using Dell again, for the same reasons.
2) I'm considering a gaming laptop in the 1k range, and found the 550/555M equipped XPS 17 looks to best fit the bill. I'm comparing these to an Asus at my local Microcenter, which is 949 for an i7-2760QM, 8GB ram, 720 7200 HDD, 550M (not sure if it's 1 or 3 GB ram). the dell's I'm considering are those in the outlet, with the i7-2630QM, 6gb ram, 500 7200 HDD, 550 or 555m, in the 900-1000 range, depending on items like bluray etc. (or a desktop with a ati 6950 2gb card, i5 2500k, 8gb ram etc, which is hitting $800+ currently)
my thoughts are if i can find an XPS 17 with a 555M 3G video setup, that it should be better than the 550M with the 200 mhz extra speed of the 2670QM. Am I reasoning correctly here? My main goal will be playing SWTOR come Christmas, along with games like ME3, and possible Dialo3. I don't do a lot of FPS anymore, my reaction times aren't so good anymore
I output my gaming to a 23" 1920x1080 display, so that is also the resolution I want to play games in. my current M9800GTS system, playing Witcher 2, is struggling mightily at the lowest settings, not even reaching 30fps routinely at 1440x900.
Having been 7 years, I'd like to make sure Dell is still offering the same good service they have in the past, and if something minor goes wrong, they still ship the item and let me toss it in without having to worry about paying someone to come to my house to do something i can do in 15 minutes. Or if I want to do some future upgrading such as to a 1920 display or some such.
Thanks,
