I have a Vaio VGN-AR109G with XP Media Center Edition and immediately following the XP logo at boot the video disappears into blackness not to reappear but the hard drive continues to function as the HDD light is still active. I recovered the 2 Toshiba hard drives which are configured in RAID 0 having 183Gb and 7Gb recovery partition with the factory recovery disks. The total recovery was slow but without errors. Win XP is functioning in safe mode and VGA mode but when I attempt to raise the resolution above 640x480 it goes black and cannot be recovered. Inversely my Mini XP rescue disk displays great resolution up to 1280x800 and above. I have installed all updates and drivers from BIOS to video card etc. without the video returning to normal. This computer has a Nvidia GeForce go 7600GT video card with 256Mb RAM, But it for whatever reason it does not seem to be working with Windows Media Center and can with the rescue disks. How can I get this thing working right? It is taking all of my time.

How to change the resolution in Windows Media Center
To get the best display resolution:-
1.Open Media Center>Click Settings>Click General>Click Media Center Setup>Click Configure your TV or Monitor.
2.Follow the on screen instructions and select a display width, click Standard (4.3).
3.Now select the appropriate display resolution and complete the instructions to get the best display effect.

I updated the video driver and the bios from Sony support and all else that could be pertinent. I did a bios scan from an Internet site following that and they said it was bad and that would figure as I have gotten signs that recovery said this machine was not even a Vaio, which of course it is. The resolution has increased in safe mode to 1024x768 but it still will not start in normal mode. I tend to think that the bios firmware is corrupted somewhere and that is what is throwing off all of the machine being able to identify itself. If it cannot even identify what it is than that would be a problem and it cannot even connect with its own video card in normal mode.

Sounded like a good diagnostic to me. Any chance to re-flash the BIOS to the original version? You might have to contact Support direct to have this mail/sent to you
