M17x r1 Overclocking GPU GeForce 260M isnt working. Any help would be great

Thread Starter

Hi guys

first let me say im sorry if this has been mentioned on this forum before but i searched here and google and couldnt find any answers, so im hoping i can solve this issue.

i have a M17x r1 with dual GPU GeForce 260M in SLI

i have been following the guide written by The_Moo. http://www.notebookforums.com/t/230731/how-to-overclock-the-m15x-m17x-gpu-and-the-m17x-cpu

i follow his steps for GPU overclocking using Nvidia System tools via nvidia control panel

i make my profile and save it, when in control panel i click profile - load and select my saved profile and everytime i do this i get a flickering grey screen. No matter what settings i choose i get the same, what am i doing wrong?

any help would be so much help and i thank you for reading

i have attached link to image showing my nvidia control panel and GPU-Z

And this is a pic taken on my phone of the grey screen im present with (sorry for some reason is upside down)

again thx for the help

Did you check out the subsequent posts in that thread? You have to play with different settings, one thing at a time watching out for heat and everything else. m17x R1 has a few bugs of its own winknudge.gif

Last but not least: do you really need to OC that GPU?

well i just bought myself a qx9300 extreme which i am going to install, just want to get the most out of this system as its for my brother. hes playing diablo 3 beta on it and on max settings it sometimes skips a bit. thought over clocking may solve this

thanks

tried everything i could see on nvidia tools, i was able to over clock the cpu via bios but i would love to OC the GPU

any ideas

thx guys

How long did you leave the OC on CPU? Gaming at full blast with no issue so far?

i over clocked the cpu via the bios, and i set it to 1285 FSB and played diablo 3 beta and crysis both on full graphics. now been 5 hours and no crashing yet. so far so good, but are there any other ways for my to OC the gpu and nvidia tools just doesnt work for me at all, even if i try to load the original profile the laptop is on i get the grey screen

Pretty good. I have read many ideas about trying OC the 260M on the net - many suggestions of using MSI or EVGA tools or flashing the vBIOS (GPU-Z and NiBiTor) - and they all come back with "it ain't worth the trouble" observation, you would be having a good chance to brick your GPU than gaining a mere few FPS

I have the feeling 260M isn't too happy overclocker - in my Asus probably 10% is safe but I don't like the extra noise it does. If possible I rather do underclock to spare my ears (and the lappie)...

i got my qx9300 and installed it without any problems

i have started by OCing the CPU via the bios.

I left it on 1066 and set the multiplier to x11 and got 2900 MHz

i checked CPUZ and OCCT and for some reason it shows the core speed and multiplier going from 2900 MHz x11 to 1600 MHz x6 and keeps changing between them

any idea what it wrong?

Probably nothing is wrong, system clocking down to save power (part of power management) - try running some intensive app and see if the core and multiplier stay in the same place

ok will run vantage and see what happens

if i OC it at 1066 x11 it seems fine, but if i OC it 1066 x11.5 i get BSOD

would you agree x11 is the bets im going to get?

Of course, it is best when it is not BSOD winknudge.gif It (11) sounds like a good round number for multiplier also wink.gif

ok also another stupid question, never updated the bios before, i have downloaded it but how do i install it?

Newer BIOS is Windows compatible, meaning all you have to do is clicking on the bat/exe file. Make sure that you are on power supply and follow the instruction to the letter, don't turn off the comp until it tells you so - last but not least - be very patient

the bat file doesnt work, says cant start or run due to incompatibity issues with 64 bit versions of windows

Right ... Search the net for "create bootable BIOS CD" - for instruction as how to make one

cheers ...
