Graphics card help?

Thread Starter

I currently have a Latitude E6500 with a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M graphics card. From my understanding this is the only version of the computer that doesn't have a graphics card sautered(spelling?) to the motherboard. Anyways, I got Skyrim today, only to figure out that my graphics card is in desperate need of an upgrade based on the huge amounts of lag while playing the game. I was just wondering if there were any hopes of an upgrade that would be able to handle graphics in today's games and fit in my laptop, or if i am just SOL. Feel free to ask questions and I will try to answer them best I can. Thanks for any help.

You can try upgrading the CPU to a T9600 if you have not done so. Graphic card can be upgraded but it is worth on the effort on the Dell E series - they are meant for mobile professional and not gamers.

Instead of upgrading, why not selling yours and use the $$$ toward a gaming machine? It would work out just about the same, hopefully, and less headache

I already have the T9600 @ 2.8 ghz but i really don't think that's the problem, i think it's just that the graphics card that i have only has 128mbs and most games nowadays need about 1g from what i hear, and i just upgraded my hard drive to a 500gb solid state hybrid so i would rather not sell my laptop off and get a new one just yet.

Yep that 128MB GPU memory is a bit weak. You would need at least 512MB for Skyrim. Short of replacing the whole board with another GPU chip on this model, I don't see an alternative at the moment.

Can always keep your CPU and SSD, selling the E6500 with min specs winknudge.gif

are you saying getting a new graphics card? because that's what i want to do i just don't know what to look for lol.

No, I don't think that you can just buy another graphic card for this Dell model, but you would need to replace whole motherboard with another GPU. I could be wrong winknudge.gif

Ok well lets say that's the case, what would I need and how would I go about doing it? Also, how much would it cost me?

You would need to take a look at your board part number, use it as reference and search for another one that would come with a higher GPU chip or with a different and better GPU chip. Many users would use another board from a comparable model. Bottom line is that it would set you back at least $400 if you are lucky

what if i got a 510m, would it take up the same space/have the same connections?

Might work, but you'll see the drop in your resolution. Too many configuration changes sad.gif
