NEED HELP WITH MY ALIENWARE M9700 AURORA!!

Thread Starter

I just got a M9700 and after two days some problems are arising. It was fine, bought with a clean install of Windows 7 but two days in I'm getting a lot of freezing and slowness.

It's got 2Gb RAM but the Usage Meter desktop gadget is saying between 85 and 95% of memory is being used at all times, and I'd really like to upgrade to 4Gb. I'm really not tech or PC-savvy, but I've been doing some Googling and struggling to find if this is at all possible, even if I had to change the CPU/GPU (whatever they are :P) or any other way.

All I'm doing is internet browsing and listening to music/watching films.

I don't know very much about PCs at all as I've been using a Mac desktop for film editing and everything else for the last 5 or so years.

Please, oh wise ones, help me!!!!

Keith.

Are your Windows and drivers up to date? How is antivirus (what are you using)? Review and see if you can disable some start-up processes and services that you don't need

Hi, thanks for a speedy response qhn!!

All Windows 7 updates are up to date, drivers should be (how do I check) although I can't get the bult-in webcam to work, seems this is an issue in compatability with Windows 7, I've only been able to find Vista drivers and the drivers I have tried from various sources including the Alienware website haven't worked.

I'm using AVG Free and that's up to date too.

Also, have just cleared out the startup list.

Thanks, Keith.

Is this a 64-bits OS? Run a chkdsk, run the system in Safe-Mode (with network) and see if any differences

Yeah it's the 64-bit version. I'll see what safe mode runs like next time I boot up, thank you. Have you any idea whether I would be able to increase the RAM beyond 2Gb?

I am not aware that you can put in more than 2GB on this model.

That's what I thought. Gutted. I've been looking into Readyboost using a flash drive too, would this help at all?

Nah, if you want to, you can try upgrading the drive to an SSD - we have a good personal guide and tip thread in the HP section, as what part to get etc ...

Think the Solid States are a bit out of my price range at the moment, I only paid £200 for the laptop itself :) Thanks a lot for your help though!!

200 quids? Not bad. According to the guide, for another 120 quids you'll have the comp flying winknudge.gif

cheers ...,
