New HP Envy 15/17"

The new HP Envy 15 and 17

298

298

15" starting at $1100
17" starting at $1250
17" 3D starting $1600

Core i5
6gig RAM
AMD 1gig GDRR5 VRAM

263

263

Some cool options:
Full HD IPS screen (15" only, 17" is TN only supposedly)
3x3 WLAN
Slot loading Blu Ray

No details yet as to what the exact GPU is, but I saw this Australian HP Envy 15 site showing the new 28nm ATI Radeon HD 7670. And this Danish site for the new Envy 17 with the 7690M XT. Found some specs here on the new Radeon HD 7000M series. But the US site shows the 15 using an AMD GPU with 1gig of GDDR5, so it could not be the 7670. Wonder how they compare to the current 6750/6770/6850 GPUs in similar sized models now.

I'm guessing maxed out these could get very expensive indeed, but I'm rethinking my choice of the Samsung Series 7 Chronos (if they actually do exist, still can't find one for sale anywhere).

All new Envy models are available Dec. 7.

Update:

Today is the first day the new ENVY models are available for purchase on the HP website. Some disappointments so far:

1. No GPU model given, only "1GB Discrete Graphics AMD Radeon(TM) [HDMI, DP]". Really? HP expects someone to plop down over $1100 for a laptop without knowing exactly what is in it?

2. Blu-Ray option is only available on the Envy 17 model for now, even though it is advertised as an option for both the 15 and 17.

3. No option for the "Optional 3x3 high-performance WLAN with Intel Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300 + Bluetooth" HP has posted here.

It is the first morning of availability so maybe HP is still working on getting everything up and running for this launch. I did call the HP sales center to try to find out more of the specifics. The sales rep could only read off of the same website I was looking at and repeatedly read back the information that was available there. When asked what model GPU is installed he had no answer, and neither did anyone else there. I hope HP's technical service is better than that azz.gif.

So far HP is not delivering on what was advertised, but hopefully more details will be out soon...even though it's already on sale.huh.gif

I really hope they update it soon if they are going to. I was really looking forward to this laptop, but after reading the disappointments I'm starting to reconsider. I'd like to know what model GPU they are using. And no bluray option for the 15' model might be a deal breaker for me. These seem like unacceptable oversights.

I called the HP sales department again and got some more information.

1. GPU is a 1GB version of the AMD Radeon HD 7690M XT
Edit: HP called me this time asking if I was interested in purchasing. I was given yet a different answer on which GPU, now I'm told it is the 7690M. Not much info on it, but from what I can find it is indeed the new 28nm chip, and was told it was faster than the current 17 model's 6850M. HP website still not listing actual model info.

2. Blu-Ray is not an option on the 15 at this time, maybe added later.
Edit: Still only available on the 17

3. The Ultimate-N 6300 + BT is not an option...it is STANDARD, but not described on the spec sheet as such.

So does this change anyone's mind? Blu-Ray should be an option but is it required, especially for a laptop in this price range?

I thought it is outside and just needed to flip out after releasing the latches. Would you have a pic of the battery position to share?

cheers ...

It looks very sleek. But the track pad seem kinda small.
