Need information about the 5690

Thread Starter
I've been looking for a while for a laptop like the Sager 5690, and it seems almost too good to be true, and that's why I"m posting this. I need to know a few things about it, and laptops in general, that I just can't find information about.

First of all, I've noticed a few threads on these forums where people got in their Sagers and said they ONLY had 3 dead pixels on their LCD. I know three is a small number, but I'm just making sure: is that a normal thing to have dead pixels on a laptop's screen? And is it even noticeable? I've been having a Toshiba Satelite for 3 years and as far as I know there isn't one dead pixel on the screen, but perhaps it really just isn't that noticeable and there are some, but that's why I'm asking.

Next, I'd never heard of Sager before yesterday. To anyone that has this computer or any Sager computer, is it good? Have you ever had problems and how was the customer service? Any other information is appreciated as well.

Next, another laptop in general question. The Sager 5690 is a 10 lb laptop. I know 10 pounds is heavy for a laptop, but is it REALLY that big of a deal?

Next, on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the loudest and 1 being the softest, how much noise does the 5690 make with just casual use?

Next, how is the battery life? I'm sure with a desktop processor it's around 90 minutes, but I'd like to know from someone with first hand experience, and if you do know, please post the processor speed and HDD RPMs so I can know exactly what's using your battery life.

And finally, would you reccommend the Sager 5690? Is it a good computer, a great computer, or an EXCELLENT computer? Is it worth the money? Would you buy from Sager again?

Thank you in advance to anyone that takes the time to answer all of this. I want the best laptop I can get, and I want to make sure I get exactly what I want and need, and something that I can rely on. If you don't have answers to all of my questions, please just post whatever you do know. All information is appreciated

Its not too good to be true! I did 4 months of research before deciding and ordered a 5690 last week from everything I read here.
Having 1 dead pixel apparently isn't a big deal because it's not very noticeable, but having 3 is rare. If you want a desktop replacement and you've been looking at the 5690, its the way to go, it also outperforms Alienware's Area51M. Good luck in your decision

There is a little button on the top of the screen that is called "SEARCH". Much of what you ask can be found in these forums by accomplishing a Search. The 5690 is a relatively new version of the 5680 (the 9700 Video card is the difference). SOme like it, others don't.

I have had a Sager since 2000 (3363V) and have ordered a replaement (8790) earlier this month. I actually ordered an 8790 when they first came out; however, must have received a "Late Friday Edition" as it has some problme and had to be returned.

Happy hunting. After searching, please don't hesitate to ask more questions.

Heh, I've been looking since November or so, as this is a graduation present. I just found out about Sager yesterday though, and obviously, I've never heard of them. From what I've seen, it is a good buy, but I wanted to make sure from people that actually own them. Good luck to you to, and I hope yours is all you want it to be! Thanks for the input as well.

Oh and Omaha, after a little searching I did find the answer to one of my questions (the noise one), and apparently its quite quiet. I'm going to continue looking, but I'd still appreciate more input

It is normal for notebook screens to have dead pixels. There are some resellers that offer a No-Dead pixel guarantee, or at times you have to pay for it.

The notebook is definetely good, take a look at the review section to read up on it. For the time that I had mine, I had no problems with it at all. In regards to customer service... it depends on where you buy the notebook from. In case you dont know, there are many other places that sell the 5690.

In regards to weight... I personaly find weight to be a large factor in my notebook decisions. Others dont really care about it because they hardly move their notebooks. But my notebook has probably traveled for about 300 miles with me since I bought it 3-4 weeks ago.

I think the 5690 is about a 5-6 in terms of sound.

Battery life is about 90-120 minutes. You can get another battery for it.

It is a very good notebook. I dont think any notebook is excellent, so ill say, a notch below excellent. I would not think twice about buying another.

Thanks enderet, that helps a ton. Now I have another question for you. Do you know of any other sellers besides Sager themselves, powernotebooks.com and pctorque.com?

There are literally tons of them. Do you want the "high rollers" or the ones that are economical. You have the ones that are most likely to have the lowest price already.

You could look at EUROCOM, PROSTAR, P3, GO-L, Hypersonic, and ********* (not recommended - at all IMHO). There are also a number of other resellers outside of the U.S.

I prefer to buy from the most reputable company with the best prices. I'm looking mostly at PCtorque and powernotebooks. And thanks for the warning, I'll stay clear of *********.

The 5690 (or a Hypersonic GX6) would be the notebook if I weren't increasingly interested in an AMD64 processor. I think it's at the top of the P4 pack.

Well, it looks like I'm definitely getting the 5690. I've narrowed down where I'm buying it to two places, powernotebooks.com and pctorque.com. Power notebooks is about 50 dollars more, but I get 19 (some of which, useful) software titles with it, that PC Torque doesn't give. My final question is, does anyone have any experience dealing with either of these sites (besides the people with @PCTorque after their name ;D), and could you tell me how doing business with them was, and if you have experience with both, or have heard of stories from both, which do you prefer? Thanks!

If you go to the PC Torque site and (configue a system). You will see an entry for "software bundle". You can get everything that you indicate (software titles) plus more for $25.

I have purchased a system from PC Torque and would recommend them. I have not had any experience with powernotebooks; however, believe that they are also a good company. I think you would be OK going with either company.

i had a 5660...the older version of the 5690 and i loved it!
i sold it recently so i can buy the new 8790..both of which i purchased from pctorque....

sometimes weight was an issue, it depended on my mood...like if i was upstairs and wanted to carry it downstairs to my living room....its always so much nicer to carry my wife's thinkpad t23 in one hand...i'm always much more careful with the sager....
hmm..sometimes i would just stare at it and think, wow , this thing is big....and be a little jealous of my friend's 4080....

HOWEVER, it's definitely a tradeoff when you want high performance....and that always shined through when we would game side by side for a few hours...needless to say, his was hot as hell, and chugging much harder than mine to keep up...

you will definitely be happy with this purchase, keep in mind where you will be using it from also....i'd have to say, if i were still in school, and i wanted something to bring to class with me, i may not have chosen this machine....but if you can get past the size, there's no regrets....

also, i had one bad pixel, which didnt show up until i had it for about a year....
