[Resolved] Are Vaio hinges designed to have some flex?

Hey guys,

I just got a new F22 Series Vaio, with which I'm overall very pleased. I've noticed, however, that the screen hinges seem to have some slight give when I push or pull the display back and forth gently. It's as though the hinges have room to wobble a bit back and forth before they're moved enough to change the positioning on of the display. I hope that makes sense.

I still have an FE Series Vaio from 2006 that exhibits the exact same behaviour, so I wonder if they're designed like that to prevent too much stress on the hinges or something?

It would be great to know if any other Vaio owners (especially F Series owners) have noticed the same thing.

Thanks!

Most (if not all) 16" screen and above notebooks will have some sort of flexibility

cheers ...

I have access to lots of F21 and F22, if you could upload a video to better explain the issue I could verify against other units.

Thanks, that would be great! I've embedded a quick video showing the behaviour I've described. What I've tried to show in it is that the screen has a couple of degrees of give before it reaches the hinge biting point. Once it's moved beyond the biting point it has good resistance and the lid never falls down or moves by itself.

My friend, who has a slightly older Vaio (I forget which series, exactly, but an older equivalent) says his does the same thing. It would be good to know if other F21/22 units are the same, however, since that would make it probably that it's part of the hinge design.

Hi!

I have not checked other F21/F22 since I just saw the video a few seconds ago, but I can tell you that I have seen such behaviour in several models, including my own EA, so my guess is that such tolerance is normal.

Awesome. Thanks very much for your response. It seems that although not all VAIOs exhibit this behaviour, those that share this particular type of hinge do. I'm glad to know that it's pretty common and nothing to worry about. :)

I checked two F22 today, they both do the same as yours...

Cheers!
