1.Which brand SSD are you considering for your next upgrade? Intel, OCZ, Crucial, Kingston, Patriot Memory, Samsung, or other?

Intel for a traditional SSD. They appear to be the current leader in terms of performance and reliability. I am kinda interested in OCZ's pci-e x4 revo drives. Also quite fast and tons of storage to boot.

2.What do you look for when selecting an SSD? Price, Performance, Brand - or a combination of these elements?

Reliability and performance. If a drive lacks either than it is not worth my money. Price also plays a role but to a much lesser extent. When it comes to things like SSD's you don't want to go cheap. If you can't afford one you're better off waiting or looking at a similar less expensive option like a Momentus XT drive from Seagate. Nowhere near the write performance of an SSD, but it's close for certain tasks while offering a lot more GB/dollar. If I were to buy an SSD today it would most likely be the 320 series currently up for grabs.

Brand

Intel

Combination of all 3; I currently own an 80gb Intel ssd, and it has performed flawlessly. I read the user comments on sales sites, and intel has a very good reputation in real world use.

  1. Which brand SSD are you considering for your next upgrade? Intel, OCZ, Crucial, Kingston, Patriot Memory, Samsung, or other?

    Official Answer: Crucial
Reason: I already have one M4 128GB SATA3 6GB/s and plan to buy a second to create a RAID0 array. It's a solid performer and I am very happy with it. I would consider an Intel or Samsung as options buying an SSD. Like Crucial, their SSD drives are excellent and they have very few bugs. Unless you find a good sale, Crucial is the more affordable option.

  2. What do you look for when selecting an SSD? Price, Performance, Brand - or a combination of these elements?

Official Answer: Combination of these elements
Reason: All three, and in the order listed. Take away one of the elements and there is a problem. Brand is last because an overpriced or poorly performing drive by any name is basically  worthless. Although brand is often associated with performance. I don't have any SSD with a Sandforce controller on my list of drives to consider.

I have zero preference, as I consider them all giant SD cards and I don't care which brand SD card I buy, either.

Price vs Performance. I could care less about brand. Reliability is also a biggie, seeing as I have an aversion to backups.

#1 Brand? Probably Intel but I'm flexible.
#2 Important factors? Price, I'm sorry to say, then performance.

1. Intel - I've read so many reviews and I have come to the conclusion that Intel has the best reliability of them all. That's why I got myself a 320 Series 160GB SSD for my laptop. Of course I wouldn't mind having another one for my desktop as well.

2. Reliability is my top priority since the drive is for my work horse laptop. I've made so many little tweaks to my Win7 that I do not want to do it again, ever! I do have image backups of the drive but if I can avoid the headache of sending the drive in for RMA, I'll take that over a little faster speed any day. Even the slowest SSD is light years faster in speed compare to the fastest mechanical drive already.

So did I win? 644_evil_grin_and_eyebrow_raising.gif
