DDR3 Question - Best memory for a given bus speed

Thread Starter
I want to add 8GB to my Acer 1830T (supported despite manufacturer claims) and the memory bus speed is 800 MHz according the the specs of the i7-680UM processor: LINK

However, recommended and included memory is PC3-10666 which has a bus clock of 667 Mhz according to the DDR3 wiki: LINK

Wouldn't the ideal memory be PC3-12800 according to the DDR3 specs?

Sure if your chipset and BIOS can take advantage of the larger bus speed - go for it

I'll assume the chipset and bios can, according the the acer site for the i5 version:
Quote:
Intel® Core i5-520UM processor (3 MB L3 cache, 1.06 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 1.86 GHz, DDR3 800 MHz, 18 W), supporting Intel® 64 architecture, Intel® Smart Cache
But if the memory bus IS running at a slower speed for whatever reason will the pc3-12800 memory then run at 667 but with higher CAS latency? Or will the CAS latency drop as the memory speed is reduced?

Tough question - you must look at the memory module specifications for the answer

Ok, thanks for your help... If you can think of anyone in the forum that might be able to help bring them in. I think my only hope is running CPU-Z and checking after installing the memory.

ahm. Running this "CPU-Z", what is that Specific we check from this tool???
I have (MSI i5 L3 at 6MB-12way, 1500MHz clockspeed, multiplied by x16 but BUS SPEED at 98MHz)

Why is my PC Still SLOW and What do i have to do??? O.O
P.S. Using nVida GT 430

HELP!!!!

Can you expand a bit more what is "running so slow"? When? Where? What were you doing?

like i use a lot of adobe products like photoshop, indesign etc... and while opening the explorer and also while copying...

i think there is a problem in the hardware itself.. like problem in the SATA cabel or so O.O...

i have a concept that if bus speed is high, the whole thing is high. :S

Your system specs are good, but that does not always translate to better apps performance since it depends on the apps themselves.

I recommend that you review your start-up processes making sure that un-needed processes are being disabled. And also checking out your antivirus settings - sometimes a free good antivirus is better than the stock paid antivirus that came with the comp.

You mentioned SATA cable ... are you working with an external storage devices?

yes last time.. i was so suspicious that exchanged the DVD rom SATA with HD SATA    XD

well .. i think the performance is better XDD

Good. Review your software environment and see if any improvements

" software environment"??? U mean i keep using what i normally do??

I meant making sure that your OS environment clean, loading up only needed processes (background services per example)

Download cCleaner (free), run it and see how many processes you have in the start-up. Disable what you don't need. This will make your system run faster

CHEERS!!!! KANPAI!

smile.gif Good luck, let us know how it turns out for you. Load up the start-up process list, we can chip in to recommend what to disable.

I think that every thing i see is important :D

there are listed the programs that i use everyday.. so.. i think i need them ^.^

smile.gif See if those needed processes can be called when needed and not automatically loading up

:D... BUT jst noticed smth...

last time.. while i was on work.. and playing some songs ...and i heard.. the music was like buffered!! O.o jst like a PC freeze

Ofcourse i had opened several programs at once.. but. they were minimized!

Minimizing is not the same thing as not being present in background. Are your Flash and codecs and Java up to date?
