Toshiba L500D - Abnormal temperature readings and fan full speed.

Hi all,

I have a 2 year old Toshiba L500D/00V. Today, the fan has been running at maximum speed! I checked speed fan and it says the CPU temp is 97c. The laptop is running cool, its barely even warm to touch. Is this an error with the Temp Sensor?

I have not got the money to buy a new laptop or get this one fixed, but i am very technology minded and i know a lot about computers. But this - never had it before?

Any help is appreciated blush.gif

Its possible you may have a dust build up around the heatsink/processor or the fan blade could be super dirty...Get a can of compressed air and blow out around the fan blades...put a toothpick through the grill to isolate the fan blade to keep it from over spinning..The dust etc buildup around the heatsink can pack so tightly that it almost looks like felt when your remove it..so air might dislodge some around there or might not..best thing is to disassemble to the processor/heatsink and physically clean them then add new Arctic Silver 5 paste as recommened on the package..more is not better in this case...you should be able to find disassembly instructions on this Toshiba laptop home page at the top in the stickies

I've just had the laptop cleaned out and new paste applied, thats why i cannot work out what the problem is. The fans are so loud im worried they might burn out or something.

Take it apart again and review the thermal paste installation. Make sure that you don't overtighten the screws of the fan

cheers ...

if it is really 97 deg C it should have switched off by itself.check if the pwm signal wire is cut /loose in the connector of the fan[hope the connector is not reversed]

what system are you running? windows linux
