New PSU

Hey Guys,

So I have a fairly new HP 1080T desktop I got recently and decided to upgrade it for the holidays.

Specs as I received it from HP:

Intel Core i7 950
AMD 6450 Graphics
8GB DDR 3 1333Mhz
96GB Kingston SSD
Pegatron IPMTB-TK
HP 460W PSU

My plan is to install a 6970 but the problem Ive been having is with the my new PSU.

I have a Thermaltake BlackWidow 850W PSU and a Corsair TX 750W PSU to test for my new PSU's.

Heres my problem:

With all my hardware from my initial PC as it was bought, has no problems. Its when I go to upgrade to a new PSU is when I run into issues.

When I connect my Corsair and hit the power, you can tell something is up, the fans are really quiet, there isnt always a POST and after about 5 or 10 seconds it just shuts off. So I said ok, its either:

1. Mobo isnt detecting new PSU voltages correctly.
2. PSU is bad.
3. Drawing too much power from the wall.
4. The single 4 pin ATX 12V isnt enough to provide the juice (Dont think its this one)

So I slapped in the Blackwidox, does the same thing, displays the same behavior.

So the PC seems to not play nice with the higher watt PSU's, maybe because they arent HP proprietary or more likely the mobo is acting up with the new bigger PSU's.

I actually have an old 400W PSU and that works ok too, so it seems once install a PSU over 460W, shit hits the fan.

What do you guys make of this?

Thanks for your help.

After some reading Ive found that the Pegatron IPMTB-TK are known for apparently having some stability issues with a new higher PSU.

Im looking to see if there is a BIOS update from HP or Pegatron (Which is an offshoot of Asus I think).

If anyone has suggestions please post.

TY

That was my next step.

I think I found a solution to this. After reading, Ive found that apprently the motherboard for this model has some quirks with high watt PSU's.

Ive read that the board wont support anything over 650W. I can confirm that a Corsair GS600 works with this board, no issues as of yet. I have a HX650 PSU on back order, Im going to test that as well, once I do I will re-post.

Thanks and Happy Holidays
