2 x 8 gig memory upgrade for DV7-4xxx series - Page 2

Thread Starter
back to original postage....

did more checking, the 880 chipset can take up to 32gig mems max (probably a slot restriction for normal modern AMD consumer MB's, 4x)...

I checked numerous manu's on the 880 specs (unfortunately, nothing persay regarding the mobile 880), they ran the gamit from 8gig max to the previously mentioned 32gig....

Still up in the air on this, I do use my laptop the most, edit vids usually same day as it travels with me on the road......

What can I say, I have the upgrade to the max tweaker bug...LOL

laterzzzz.....

Hello bldegle2,

Yeah, that sounds like a slot restriction more than anything else. A lot of newer desktop boards seem to be bitting with four slots these days rather than two. Brings me back to the days when boards had three or four anyway usually because the sticks were too small in capacity to hit the limits with anything LESS than three or four slots.

It SOUNDS like your 880 mobile might work with 16 GB. In the end, all you can do is try, really. Like I said, a reputable shop should allow a refund, but if nothing else you can probably sell them off to someone else if they don't work, too.

Good luck. Again, let us know if you try it and what you find out!

Hello all,

While this doesn't necessarily help the system the thread-starter has, I can tell you that a DV7-4296NR (Intel Core i7-2630QM) WILL support 16 GB despite various resources claiming that 8 GB is the max.

Such fun, finding that the information provided in various spots is not right/not up to date.

I bought a 2x8 GB Mushkin kit from NewEgg that was $30 off with a code (wound up being $120) and popped it in, fired up with no problem. Amusingly, the memory quantity displayed in the BIOS is 6,384 MB. There isn't enough space to display the full number. I panicked at first thinking it wasn't working, then remembered... 16 GB = 16,384 MB. 6 GB = 6,144 MB

Anyway, just goes to show you: If in doubt, give it a try as long as you can afford to.
