Ubuntu issues...

On my main desktop PC (AMD 1050T, ASUS M5A99X-Evo, 16Gbs of RAM, 850w PSU, 2GB NVidia 430 GPU), Ubuntu randomly fails to load and freezes at 'Checking Battery State'.. There are various workarounds, like hitting CTRL+ALT+F1, then entering the command prompt and restarting X or the lightDM module, but so far this persists. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the nVidia driver (the 'apparent culprit') with no joy.. I have googled and been on the Ubuntu forums, no fix... I have tried ATI and it still persists, so it leads me to believe it is a light DM issue...

I bang my head on the desk with frustration....

I think about changing Distro's (SUSE/Mandrive etc...)...

Has anyone experienced it on an Intel or VIA GPU?

Has anyone come across this issue and it has been completely fixed (yes I know there are variables involved)?

Once I am in, it seems pretty stable, it is just getting there.......

Give Suse a shot Mr T. It is confirmed from a colleague at work that it works with the configuration you mentioned above

It seems to have stabilised... I have reset the XConf file and remove lightDM and moved over to GDM (Gnome Display Manager)... Fingers crossed....!!! SUSE looks nice...

That's all we use in the office (SUSE). Cool that you found a solution to the issue

Goddammit..... ^%&^?@:>< X seems to crash once a day - no data loss though, but it does annoy......

Seems SUSE has a similar problem... It must be the nVidia drivers... Roll on the new Kernel....

Which version of SUSE and which version of nVidia are you using?

Kinda new to Ubuntu but can't you use xforcevesa to force your gpu to use the vesa video driver and thereby bypass the nvidia driver that is causing the issue?

Give it a shot, you might want to add nomodeset as well

All is stable... Still use GDM over LDM, they must have updated an issue with the nVidia drivers... Runs along quite nice.. Moved it onto an SSD (OCZ Vertex III) and it really does motor.. Swapped out the hex core for an FX4100 which has a quicker clock speed... The only issue now is USB 3.0.....!
