MS2274 power switch problem

Has Gateway historically had problems with the power switch at the end of the monitor hinge?

This was my daughter's computer at school. She had problems with it starting up intermittently at first. Instead of letting me know she was having problems, she kept hitting the power button until it started. Now it will not start up at all. The "Best Buy" tech agreed with me that it is likely the switch. It seems a waste to discard a computer because of a faulty switch, but "BB" quoted me a price to repair it that is almost as much as an equivalent computer. I will get another repair quote before I discard it.

Can you clarify a bit more about "not starting up"?

. You press the power button - what happens? Light? Noise? etc ...
. Is the battery full? Is it charging with ac adapter?
. What made your daughter keep hitting the power button? Error messages?
.
