HDMI Audio question

Hi,

My laptop has an HDMI connection, obviously for connection to a HD TV, which I do not anticipate ever using.

I am however interested in improving the quality of the audio from my laptop.

Is there any way the HDMI connection be used for just audio? connection to my Hi Fi system?

It would also free up a valuable USB port on the laptop!

Any advice and constructive suggestions would be very welcome.

Cheers

Chris

What are the specifications of your HiFi? Stereo, surround, HDMI input etc ..
You can check the notebook for HDMI digital sound output, it you have that option, then you can get 2 channels audio out from your HDMI

Hi,

My HiFi is nothing flash, an old but reliable Technics system based on a SA5150 Receiver, with a pair of Wharfedale bookshelf speakers and a decent home built subwhoofer.

Not sure how to check HDMI specifications on my laptop, but I have ordered an HDMI/RCA adapter to see whether it will work.

I'm wondering if it will only output sound from DVDs and video, and not play MP3 files through the HDMI port?

Cheers

Inside Audio Properties you should have options of digital output (HDMI devices). If you don't have these then your notebook HDMI will not output sound. If you do then any media files that have sound will put out sound via the port.

Checking my user manual (usually the last resort!) I find the following:

'The HDMI port connects the computer to an optional video or audio device, such as a high-definition television, or any compatible
digital or audio component.'

I suspect I will need to connect up the HiFi with the adapter, when it arrives, then the device will show up in my device list.
That will be sometime next week, I'll let you know how I go. At this point I'm feeling confident!

Cheers

Chris
