HP 8510p memory won't run at rated speed

The 8510p supposedly supports dual-channel DDR2-800. I had one stick of 800 and one of 667, so naturally it ran at 667 (333mhz). I installed a 2nd stick of DDR2-800 identical to the other one, and it's *still* running at 667.

I checked the speed in memtest86+ and pc-mark 7.

What gives??

A little update. Various testing tools keeps reporting incorrect specs for this laptop. However, I'm concluding that the memory speed indeed remains at 667 because various benchmark results are unchanged after the upgrade.

For example, my T7500 (2.2ghz) is reported by memtest86+ (4.20) at 2.4ghz... and pcmark7 and Sandra12 give wildy varying cpu, fsb and memory speeds. Some also report the GPU memory incorrectly.

How am I supposed to trust these tools??

Is it possible that this laptop - which I got originally off ebay -- has a 'customized' bios?

Unless someone confirms having this model running at max ram speed, manufacturer BIOS and chipset constraint won't support it. It is not the 1st time either that pushing ram speed module to "fit" so called board support won't work

Nice to see you back doug_ny

cheers ...

Yeah, that seems to be the situation. So much for squeezing more out of this laptop.

so does this model max out at 667mhz? All the specs ive seen list it as using 800mhz DDR2.

Hi all,

Just an observation:

According to the HP specifications for the model, it uses the PM965 north bridge, which is the same as in my DV9700.

My DV9700 currently has two Corsair 4 GB DDR2 800 MHz modules installed, running at a speed of 667 MHz. Additionally, a quick glance around my usual haunts on the net says that the PM965/GM965 is in fact limited to 667 MHz for memory speed.

While ANY spec listing is potentially wrong, enough of them in respectable places tends to convince me short of proving them wrong myself.

I DID find some forum posts from people stating they had 800 MHz and even 1066 MHz modules running in their system, I would tend to think that they are simply able to boot the system with such modules in place. That doesn't mean they're actually getting the speed, especially as the PM965 doesn't even support 1066 MHz FSB for the CPU (or else I would've been ALL over a better chip than the T9300).

As unfortunate as it seems, 667 MHz does seem to be the limit. Just wanted to toss some further evidence on the pile since I have a similarly specced system.

Regards,
O Shadow Fox O
