Upgrade help. (Yes another one of those)

Thread Starter

Hello all!

I would like to ask for your assistance. I have searched the forum but have not found the specific answer to my questions. I found one thread where the guy said dont link him to threads showing what he could upgrade so no one did and his specs are very similar to mine. I am currently deployed and what little time I get on the computer I spend doing my classes so it is hard to spend a whole lot of time trying to find these answers so PLEASE help me out if you could, I would really really appreciate it.

So, I am wanting to upgrade my M17x R1. She is currently running a Core2 Duo P8700. That is the main thing I would like to bump up. I found the Intel® Core2 Extreme Processor Qx9300 but at $1000ish seems rather pricey. The T9900 seems more in the right price range, but would I see a justifiable performance jump? I really liked what I saw on the Qx though. Are both of these compatible?

The other thing I would like to do is add the second vid card. I have the single 1g Nvdia GTX 260M. I was wondering if anyone has previous experience with purchasing one used and what things I should look for/ask when buying it second hand. I saw one place had it complete, then another mentioned something about a ribbon cable requirement. I would think they would come complete minus maybe the fan.

I have already upgraded the machine to 8g RAM and that helped quite a bit. She is a bit over two years old and I want to make sure that she can handle Diablo III whenever they FINALLY decide to put it out.

Thanks for the help. I know you veterans see these questions daily, and as a veteran member of other forums understand your aggravation. But I try to help out those guys also and I am hoping you will help me out too. Even if it is just pointing me to a thread discussing it or maybe a list of compatible CPUs.

Thanks!!!

Take a look at the "sticky" threads and see if most of your queries can be answered. Welcome to NBF
