Hi guys,
I know I’m probably the person with the least posts on the forums
considering I’ve been registered for ages. But I hope you take my word for it when I say I’ve been around often reading everything from reviews to news to forums and such. Top notch stuff, in any case.
My computer: Alienware Aurora m9700, pretty much full specs, bought November 2006 in the UK (I live in Europe). So it’s quite old, so I maybe shouldn’t be as sad as I am as it has been my only rig since.
And now down to my story. Last weekend my computer still worked without a problem. That is, except for the normal problems of an old rig. Earlier this week, however, when I opened the computer and turned it on, I thought D’OH
, what the hell is this s**t. (see photo 2012-02-01)

It’s kinda hard to see in the photo, but at this stage, at the very left of the display, there was about 1” of white-like screen. The image is still visible “behind” this “curtain”, with a blue image behind it it looked like a bunch of vertical thin white lines. I could’ve still lived with this, I guess, for the next half-year until I figure out whether Windows 8 is worth it.
Of course fate should have it, BOOM! The screen screws up some more…
(see photo 2012-02-03)

It is now about 2” on the left side, and now it’s full black, nothing visible behind it. And it looks like it’s there to stay.
I opened the screen, looked around, and it looks fine, as far as I could see with my slightly untrained eye. The connections are solid, there are no cables pinched, all the lighting looks fine too – but the display still doesn’t show any response on those 2” on the left of the screen. And the inverter itself is pretty damn hot – not sure if that’s normal.
After some
research it seems there are only 3 causes for this sort of malfunction.
1) The LCD itself
2) The cable to the LCD
3) The inverter
I need your guys’ help to see if you can help me figure out which one of these it is. Suggestions as to how I could narrow it down would be incredibly appreciated – and if anything, any recommendations regarding whether or not it’s actually worth trying to fix it (replacing whatever it is) would also be good to hear.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help, I would love this forum even more if you could!
Regards to all,
Ric
