All help on board

Well gents, here we go:

I originally signed up with the belief that I was going to buy a Sager. After going over many thoughts and figuring out what I wanted in a notebook, I decided that perhaps I should look elsewhere. I also did much searching in this forum. Here is what I’m going to be using it for:
Word Processing for College

Watching/burning DVDs (I don’t watch TV, and I don’t want to have to buy a TV and DVD player in college so this will be my DVD player)

Internet and perhaps a game or two (I’m not a big gamer)

With this in mind, I decided I wanted a 15.4 inch screen (I don’t like the regular 15 inchers; I would rather have a 15.4). Because I will be using this on the road for typing and watching DVD’s I really want a clear screen. I also want it to be slim and have decent battery life, so I want the Pentium M Dothan. I also want a durable, reliable system (hardware and software) that I can count on. I also want customer service, which counts Dell out. Because I will be typing, I think the keyboard should be decent as well. Oh yes, sound system is another important factor as I will be listening to music and watching movies. I’m not too concerned with upgradeability.

Like every other newbie, I would greatly appreciate some advice. I, thus far, have come up with these two desktops: Acer 2020 and hypersonic CX6.

Both only have XGA screens (both 1280 x 800), but they are both advertised as being special, especially the Acer. Does anybody know how sharp/clear the displays are? How would they compare? I know that image quality is more than just the display. As such, they both offer the Radeon 9700 128mb. The Acer 2020 also boasts a, “Cinema Vision - Fits 4:3 and 16:10 video to LCD with non-linear stretching algorithm Clear Vision - Detects video frame by frame and changes saturation, brightness and contrast controls dynamically to deliver sharper, more vivid image,” but I don’t know if that is just hype. Right now I’m leaning towards the Acer. It has a better pad (with nifty scroll wheel), aluminum casing, 4x DVD burning compared to the CX6’s 2x, better priced with everything even, 80 GB hard drive (I’m not sure of speed), and it has better audio. However, the CX6 is lighter with slimmer dimensions, and I could buy the CX6 directly from Hypersonic; whereas, with the Acer 2020 I would buy from Harmony (third party) which, for all I know, could complicate things.

Well, thanks for reading all of this. Any input is greatly appreciated. The more the better! I can’t just go to BestBuy and try these systems out, and I may end up putting 2,300ish down, and that’s a lot of money for me, so I could really use some help. I’m going to be scrutinizing every reply, so thank you guys very much for your help.

Side Note: I actually considered a Powerbook with the 15 inch screen, but thought better of it.

Forgot to add: From searching this site, people claimed that PC Torque was going to sell the Acer 2020, whom I would love to buy it from.

Also forgot to add: http://notebookforums.com/showthread...&highlight=cx6

This thread was very helpful for me because I'm in the same boat. I too want to hear from people who own either laptop.

I know there are a lot of current threads just like mine, but I would like any input on my question regarding the screens. Thanks

well, since we really ARE in the same boat, i'm afraid i can't be of much help.

BUT apparently, in about two weeks (but probably longer, b/c hypersonic-pc seems slow in getting things done), a new and improved version of the CX6 will be out. That's just a heads up. I have no idea if this is at all relevant, haha, sorry.

Yeah, Kangazoom, we really loooking for the same laptop. I really want a desktop with a great screen. Also, from what I understand, the Acer 2025 has a beautiful sound system. I would go with the 2025 if it offered an upgrade over the 4,200 80HD. Man, I'm going to be spending so much money that I want my system to be perfect.

What is the updated CX6 going to be like?

updated cx6?? where did you heard this from???

uriel -- i had a question about the cx6, so i e-mailed hypersonic. and the salesperson who e-mailed me back was very nice and prompt.

here is the portion of the e-mail about the new centrino-based laptop:

"3) If you can hold off for 2 weeks or so we will be releasing a new
Centrino-based laptop (similar to the CX6 but better) which will be an
improved product. "

Why not sell the 4,200 RPM on eBay and use the money towards a faster hard drive from a third-party vendor? It's usually chepaer to buy them that way, anyway.

Yeah, but I'm not that computer savvy. Also, I'm really streching my budget as is.

I went to BestBuy today and saw the Xbright screen. Very nice. How would this screen compare to the acer 2025?

Does anybody know how Sager's "super clear glossy surface" would compare to Sony's Xbright. Likewise, how would the Acer 2025 sceen compare.

your needs are exactly mine when i bought my laptop a few days ago..
i wanted soimething for papers, email, and just a sturdy system. And occasionally if I wanted to play a game or two..i'd be able to...and i wound up with a compaq r3000t 2.8 ghz. Its really nice. Check it out.

Update: at this point, I think I'm going to go with the Acer 2025; however, before I buy i'm going to wait for the release of Asus' W1 with it's SXGA+ screen.
