Gaming Laptop and Desktop Replacement Advice - Feb, 2012

Thread Starter

Hello everyone, i'm about to sell my desktop and move to a laptop-only environment =)!

My uses are limited to the basics (e-mail, downloads etc) and pretty hardcore gaming.  I typically play 3 hours a night and a lot more on weekends.  I plan to have the laptop plugged into the wall, so battery life will not be an issue.  Games are things like WoW, Aion, and eventually Diablo 3 and likely whatever FOTM MMORPG hits next.

I've spent the last few weeks looking over every gaming laptop site and i can find, and it looks like every site has a different review, and most are very dated =(

I like big screens.  I like max settings.  I'll use a cooling pad.  I'd like to spend ~2 grand, less is fine, and in no event more than 3 grand.  The longer it lasts the better, but a handful of years is what i'd expect at that price.

Any suggestions would be welcome!  It seems like Alienware uses good stuff, but its heavy and overpriced.  Asus looks promising, but there are SO many brands that i just dont know what to trust.

Please feel free to ask any questions if i missed anything, and thank you SO much for reading!

Sager/Clevo do have some models which look like what i'd be in the market for, i think the clevo 180 and sager 8180 if i recall specifically.

Two issues that have come up are build quality and the specific seller.

I've read that purchasing from a reseller like avadirect or amazon is cheaper (makes sense, appears true) AND has better customer service.  Is there a reason that works?  Is there a trade off i'm missing, or is it really just mass-sold to amazon and thus price reduction for Sager not having to deal with customers as often directly?

Towards build quality, a lot of the products scare me.  Technical specs i can do, but screen quality, component interactions, etc are scary.  I'm assuming Sager/Clevo won't disappoint??

Thanks!

there are a handful of sager resellers. PCTorque, and xoticpc, are two of the ones with the better reputations around here.

Of the two, xoticpc seems to do product refreshes more often (offering newer components more quickly) than PCT. PCT offers an Accidental damage plan, if that's a worry for you, which xoticpc doesn't (or at least didn't the last time I checked). Both PCT and xotic have great customer support. SAGER tech support isn't always the greatest but there are several online communities you can use to diagnose and fix pretty much any problem you have.

MSI is another laptop manufacturer you might be interested in. I suggest you check them out. And as you mentioned the ASUS gaming models are pretty nice too.

I can't comment on buying a lappy from Amazon. I wouldn't because I don't like the base configurations and I'm not certain how much they'll let you customize, but if you like the specs they offer and like the price I can't see why not. Also, with the resellers you can buy SAGER warranty plans (again if that's a concern for you) and I think you can only buy 3rd party plans on amazon (excluding the 1 year limited parts and labor warranty on all systems)

If you are searching for an affordable laptop that can handle productivity and multimedia work just as well, consider the Samsung RF510-S01. And please visit this site for specifications,,>>

Definitely consider a MSI GT780DXR, which would come in well under budget compared to Alienware.

Also, Dell is worth some consideration. Their desktop replacement range such as XPS 17 is worth thinking about.

And yes, Asus is a good make for gaming, too, as others have mentioned. There's a good review of one of their top end laptops, the Asus Automobili Lamborghini VX7, linked. The reviewer mentions the G53SW also, which is a bit cheaper. All worth considering.
