Acer 5920G screen went black

The laptop works perfectly but the screen doesn't. I need to use external monitor but the laptops screen stays black.

I have tried removing battery and memories and hook them up again one by one. I re-installed all the video drivers. I tried to update bios but that didn't work out and I got an error message. Maybe because windows 7 64-bit needs singed drivers. In the control panel it can't even find the internal display.

What could be the reason?

Thanks!

Could either be a bad inverter or might be a bad screen...Inverter would probably cost a couple of dollars..new LCD a lot more

Thanks Saugen but I think those things are not the case in this one because it's even more stranger now. If I push the power button and close the screen (external monitor is on) and when windows starts open the laptop screen I have the same view in both screens. BUT the screen resolution changes to 600x480 or something like that and if I press "detect" or "identify" screen (not sure what is the exact name because my windows is in Finnish) it goes black again in the laptop but the external monitor resolution changes back to normal.

So the screen is working but is the problem on hardware or drivers or bios or what?

Does not hurt going through all drivers, using the stock ones from Acer support site; and or a clean OS reinstallation ...

cheers ....

If you have time and are doing a clean install, why not try a free Linux distro on there to see if there is a screen problem..If not, then its obviously a driver issue

Reinstalling didn't work. Any other suggestions? Linux install? Any idea how to update bios in windows 7 professional 64 bit? It's just saying that I don't have the administrator rights although I have.

Thanks!

I updated the video bios from the acer website (all went good) and now I have no picture at all. If I remove the video card the screen is white so it's surely working. So is this a video card issue? And is it worth buying new one or a new laptop at once? Used ati mobility radeon 3650 is 60 euros in ebay and new ati HD4670 is 200 euros.

Thanks.

Updating or changing your GPU (graphic processor unit)(Video chip) that is not easily done with laptops if at all. Have you tried an external monitor......Not sure what the result was in your initial post...If the external monitor works, and the laptop doesnt, pretty much points to a faulty screen...Check on EBay for replacement LCD's for that model..As mentioned, you could try an inverter first..they are only a couple of bucks. if the inverter doesnt do it, then you have to try a new LCD..if you have the restore CDs, you could try a reinstall or try Linux Mint or any of the other free linux distros to make sure its not a driver issue before shelling out the bucks for a new screen ((http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-149557.html)). This article indictes that the5920G came with the 8600M GS and also recommend replacing it with another..and, if you find a replacement, make sure if possible that its from an Acer so the bios will match up

The external monitor worked first but after I updated the video bios (I am sure it was the right version and it went allrigth) it didn't work anymore. But could it be the screen if it goes all white without the video card? And before the bios update i could get it to work with crappy resolution and it didn't detected the monitor right.

Do you think that the screen is most likely the one rhat is broken? I think the used video card is the cheapest one to try first if not taking account the inverter. But if it doesn't work with the "new" video card it would have been better to buy new computer.

Yes, I downloaded it from the acer site and it was the right one.

I downloaded a new vBIOS from here: http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/index.php?page=1&architecture=NVIDIA&manufacturer=Acer&model=8600M+GS&interface=&memSize=512 and I tried to flash it blind but how to know if the flash went ok? So I put the new bios.bin file to the stick with the two other files and did autoexec.bat file. It should do the flash automatically right? If the windows starts after reading the stick for a while it went wrong?
