ASUS X44H Internal Wifi Replaceable?

Thread Starter

Does anyone know how difficult it is to replace the the Atheros AR9285 mini PCI card that comes from the factory with something else that's 5GHZ compatible?  Is it more difficult than average or is it easier than average to replace the internal WiFi on this laptop model?

Is there a known replacement card that fits and works with the antenna that comes with this notebook?

I want 5GHZ for better HD video streaming and to avoid interference whenever the microwave oven is used.

Pretty much any PCIe wireless card should work. As far as better connectivity with a "big/fast" card, there is no warranty on it. It all depends on router and internet speed and device driver

Internet speed won't matter since I would be streaming video from my local network.  My 2.4 GHZ 802.11N network can't handle 2 PCs streaming HD on the network at the same time and disconnects or slows down severely when the microwave oven is in use.

Has anyone know how much disassembly is required to access the wifi card on the X44H?

Also, some laptops have unusal antenna connections that don't work with every wifi card, so I wan't to make sure I don't waste time ordering one that doesn't fit or work.

I'm thinking of getting either an Intel Ultimate N 633ANHMW or Intel 6200.

A bandwidth issue?

Yes. There will be more bandwidth available when I connect on the 5ghz network than on 2.4ghz. The 5ghz network will not be affected by using a microwave oven.
So, all the problems shroud be solved if there is a 5ghz wifi card compatible with this notebook and that fits in the same slot as the factory-installed Atheros.

Would you have a pic of the current card and position? I could not get a clear pic of this Aetheros from my searches

I assume this is the card.

Nice pic. Seems like all you need is finding the same form factor card and it should work

I can't get a new card to work. I can't get the old card out. I can't tell if if that metal on it is a bracket holding it down and I don't want to force it in case it's bolted down .
I ordered a new Intel Ultimate N 6300 633ANHMW card and when I opened the package, I see it has 3 antenna connections on it, but the Atheros card in the notebook only has two. I don't know if the card is incompatible or if it will work properly with just two leads connected.

If you can get it fitting in, 2 connectors would do, but then it defeats the whole purpose of the new card.

I'm only getting the new card so I can use the 5Ghz band so I don't lose connection every time the microwave oven is turned on.  Unless 3 antennas are required for 5Ghz, using 2 antennas will not defeat the purpose of the new card,

I can get another antenna, but it may not be worth the effort to install if the entire laptop needs to be disassembled to run the antenna wire were it needs to be,

If I can install another antenna and just run it straight across to where the hard disk drive is and tape it on top of the disk cover, then I'll do that, but  if it needs to be run behind the LCD, it will probably be too difficult and risky of an installation.

I think the existing wifi card must be screwed down somehow because it is too difficult to remove.  I thought it would just pop out like a memory stick.

Most (if not all) notebook antenna would need to be by the hinges above the keyboard and power bezel area or behind the LCD. If you can pull the wire up to the hinges then it might work. I am not surprised if the card is being screwed down, many SSDs are winknudge.gif

I think I see the screw in the photo.  I'll try unscrewing it later.  A new antenna wire should arrive today.

Does it matter which color wire connects to which lead when I insert the new WIFI card?

Taking the laptop further apart to run the antenna wire under the keyboard or behind the LCD is too risky.  I think I'll try just taping the third wire to the hard disk enclosure.

I assume doing it that way should be better than nothing.  The current Atheros WIFI works acceptably except that it's on the 2.4GHZ band and loses connection from using microwave ovens and wireless phones. I don't need any more range. I'm never more than 20 feet away from the WIFI router when at home.

I decided to just plug it in with two existing cables and it's working,  I'm using Windows 8 Consumer Preview and the driver was just recognized automatically.  I was able to connect to my 5ghz Wi-Fi network with no problems.  If I start having weak signals or dropping connections, I'll try to figure how to run the third antenna connector and see if it helps.  So far, it looks like it will be OK as is,
