Yelllow stripes on monitor. Fail to start/crashing

Hello. I start with the problem which looks like this:

52aq2q.jpg

The story is: I put on hibernate my laptop (Amilo Xi2428) . When i turned on again the computer the screen was completely gray and it was not responding to anything, so i did shut it down.

Please note, that before putting to hibernate i did not install any kind of software, neither did touch anything on the hardware

When i started it, before it did even boot it started to show the lines. I entered the bios, the lines were there plus i was seeing different characters all around my screen. I tried to boot on windows or on linux, but i could not. The laptop was failing to boot on any OS, same happened also with a live CD of Kubuntu.

After leaving it for many hours to cool down, it finally started again without any problem. 20 minutes later i got again a gray screen and the laptop freezed. After trying to start it again it failed.

Further information: Software that read GPU information show the clock speed at zero. Furthermore the GPU temp is about 65c while my CPU at 40. Something tells me that there is something going on with the VGA, the question is what can i try to see if i am able to resolve the problem ?

Regards Stephan

Try first taking the Amilo apart and perform a good cleaning with new thermal paste.

It is also possible that your GPU is on the way out - try to get another board or just "baking" it to stretch the life of the Amilo out a bit longer

The VGA is also my first thought.

So the problem is not reversable ?  Cannot be fixes? Now i have the laptop totally open on the bottom and a fan hitting it and barely works.

GPU utilities are unable to find what VGA i have. But its not a driver issue as the problem starts even before the laptop boots.

Unfortunately i am not so familiar with hardware in order to remove the heatsink with the heatpipes.

What could have caused this? The only solution is a new mainboard ?

Nope - once this starts it won't stop. Remedy is either a replacement board or as mentioned above, try baking it. Search the forum for "bake baking" there are plenty of personal (and professional) successful tios as how to go about it.

Time to tinker with the hardware? wink.gif It ain't so bad, could be a fun learning project smile.gif

Does that mean that the chip is already damaged ? I thought that those things either work or don't. Correct me if i am wrong.

The chip itself might not be damaged, more likely the soldering spots to the mainboard are drying out and/or getting loosed (can't see with naked eyes)

I am almost sure now it is the onboard VGA.
I removed the external fan and run a graphic test. Once the GPU reached 75c the laptop froze and the monitor turned black.

75c does not sound so extreme to me. I saw many graphic cards running at that temp under full load.

After i plugged again the external fan and the VGA cooled down it was free to go.

So, can i consider the VGA as damaged or the cooling system ?

You said free to go - back to normal or still issue with the stripes? Try cleaning the fan up and put new thermal paste on the GPU and see how long it will last. My take is still with a failing GPU

Maybe finally this is the cheapest option that i have.

But as i said, i do not find 75c that high for a GPU , especially for a nVidia 8600.

What i find weird is that although the GPU is heating up and the CPU is still cool, the fan does not want to increase the rpm that much. It starts to turn a bit faster but not that much to cool the gpu i guess.

A NVIDIA chip failure may take place due to a weak die/packaging material set. The solder can become too dry because of the regular temperature fluxes of the computer, and will therefore stop making contact to the motherboard. Fujitsu is just one among many computer brands that use NVIDIA chip technology and have experienced malfunctions because of the graphics processors and chipsets generating heat.

The ways by which you can tell that your NVIDIA graphics chip in your Fujitsu may be failing include:

  • Multiple images
  • Random or unusual characters on the screen
  • Horizontal, vertical or jagged lines appear on the screen
  • Video freezes
  • Video is distorted or scrambled

A reply from info@creativeit.tv was not was i was expecting. I was told of 135 UK pounds for the service.

I thought that would be something like a recall from nVidia, but apparently it is not

There was a recall but very specifically to certain manufacturers (Dell, HP). The recall expired long ago

As mentioned above, this can happen with ATI as well. So "bake" it and save yourself 135 quids, you have nothing to lose and a wealth of knowledge of your noteboom internal to gain, not mentioning a working-again system winknudge.gif
