TV Tuner, Recording, and PowerVCR II

Im getting very frustrated with the drivers and software that come with the Sager 8887. I know that people are having problems using the recording software that comes with the computer and some users have recommended PowerVCR II. Well I can't get any of them to work.
I re-installed my computer with XP Pro and all the original drivers that came on the CD. At this point the TV softwares VCR function crashes when I try to record. I tried to update most of the drivers with any available updates from the Sager site. I tried to install them in varuious different orders and could not get the software to work. I got what actually appears to be older versions of the software from the AverMedia site, installed these and it all works again, but I loose all the recording features that where available in the original software (Changing recording resolution, etc.). So I decided to try PowerVCR II. I installed over my existing TV software, and I also tried installing without my TV software, just the drivers and I can't get PowerVCR II to work. It crashes as soon as it loads. The screen appears, I get static on the display and can hear static sound as if the tuner has'nt been tuned, which is the case, so I know it can see the TV tuner card.

Has anybody else had the same problem.
I've searched the forums, but can't see anything quite the same as this problem.

HHHeeelllpppp.
Any ideas Adam ?

PowerVCRII requires WDM drivers, and the ones that come with the included software are VxD drivers. Download and install the AverMedia WDM drivers for WinXP, I believe that the correct ones are the TV98 With Remote (BT-878) ones ( don't forget to uninstall the VxD drivers... ). Or go to http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/
to get some...

Sawasdee Krup BazooDJG,
I thought you already fixed the TV driver/program problem... that's weird, we have the same hardware (8887) and same OS (Windows XP).... I don't have any problem with any TV program so far... AverTV, WinDVR, Power VCR II.
Make sure you download the lastest driver from Aver site... do not download the driver for "TV98 (BT-878 chip)" ... it's the old one.... download "AVerTV Studio 4.31", in this package there are new AverTV Studio 4.31, newer driver for BT-878 chip and Video codec.
Hope this might help...

Hmmm. Sounds like I DLd the wrong drivers from the Avermedia site.

I'll head over and get the correct driver immediatly. Let ya know later of all is well.

If anyone else is looking for the Avermdeia download page, you can find it here:

Thanks for the help.

Well, I DL'd the WDM driver as you recommended and now at least the TV Studio VCR functions are working. I'm still having problems with PowerVCRII. Same problem in that it crashes as soon as it loads.
Do you have the 3.06GHz processor with the HT turned on? I seem to have had more problems with my TV software ever sinse I installed the new BIOS and turned on HT.
Anyway, maybe I'll try a fresh install again tomorrow just to make sure that nothing else got left behind with all the screwing around I've done today.

Have you tried the BTWINCAP drivers? does anybody know if they are any better than the Aver drivers?

Thanks again.

It seem people with 3.06 HT have some problem with TV driver.
I have 2.66GHz and every VCR software I try on my system work without any problems, Power VCR II, WinDVR, WinVCR... I prefer WinDVR it has more advance function and movie that record with this program look a bit better than Power VCR II.

Here's the official work from Sager:

When you upgrade the 3.06GHz with the new HT BIOS, the VCR record functions no longer work in the TV Studio software. They have reported this to the research group and are waiting for a fix.
In the mean time I downloaded the latest TVStudio software from Aver and the record function now works. Sager told me to use this software at my own risk and it is not supported by them.

I still can't get PowerVCR II to work, even with the new WDM driver from Aver. The application just crashes as soon at it loads.

Sager told me to call back in a week or 2 to see if they have a fix yet.

Again, you can download the new WDM driver and TV Studio software on the AverMedia download page at:
http://www.aver.com/support/downloads.shtml
Then download the AVerTVStudio 4.31 software.

Good luck.

I downloaded the 4.31 AVermedia software and drivers, and I still crash when I try to record. What I did is remove the 4 AVermedia drivers in the Sound, video, and game controllers area. Uninstalled the application software, rebooted, and it still wouldn't record without bombing. I then removed the 4 drivers again and the application again, but this time without rebooting I used the Add Hardware function from the control panel to find the TV tuner, then individually added the 4 drivers back, rebooted, then added the TV tuner application software. Still won't record. What have you done differently?

Thanks,

Daryl

8887 - 3.06HT P4, DVDRW, No Mp3,

I should add this to the sig while posting.

same problems with the recorder here.
I went so far as to remove the offending driver files as listed as dependents under the details for the driver in Device Manager (not all just obvious files) from the winnt/system32 directories.

I installed all the drivers and then averstudio 4.3 (from URL above)

and crashed during record.

I used the BTinstaller.exe from the link to sourceforge above to clean out the drivers and reinstalled the new drivers for Averstudio as per the documentation inside of the Averstudio package.
Still Bombed on record.

What should I do?

Someone said that the problem started with HyperThreading. Something I was going to try was turning HyperThreading off, but I have't had time (spend too much time reading these)

Well this is driving me crazy. I decided to refresh everything on my machine as I'd been installing and removing drivers and software like crazy trying to get the recording working and now I can't get it to work again.
I've tried installing in all sorts of different orders and different versions trying to recreate the situation that allowed me to get the VCR functions working as before but I can't.
I'm gonna try the same. Disabling HT and re-installing again. Failing that, I want to see if I can get the older BIOS version back to the same as before I upgraded for HT support.
This may take a few days so stay tuned for more.
Unless Sager find a solution before I do

Well, Well, I disabled HT in the BIOS and ran the Windows repair to re-install windows for regular processor and everything is working great using the new WDM drivers.
I'm gonna do more testing with PowerVCR II and WinDVR to see if they also now work. It's getting late here though and I need some sleep soon. Can't cope with these 2am's anymore
Stay tuned for more.

Everything is working pefectly.
I installed PowerVCR II, WinDVR and MyDVD. They all recognised the capture device and worked perfectly.
Yahoo.
Shame about the HT BIOS. Hopefully we can get this solved quickly.

Cool... that's what I thought... it seem all the people who have a problem with TV driver have a 3.06GHz with HT enable bios.
So, you have to choose between performance or stability of the system...

The whole disable HT in the BIOS / fix XP thing is pretty much not an option here.

I had a hellacious time getting XP to install. I'm sure it's a disk issue, though.

On my first install, I actually had to Install Win2K and then upgrade to XP, because I couldn't get the XP disc to boot on start. Anywhat, without a booting XP disc. I'm pretty sure I can't do a repair. Or am I wrong?

Thanks in advance

p.s.
Either way it's a crime that I can't use the "entire" capability of my new lappytoppy (sorry, I watched Clockwork Orange last night & Can't get the linguistic stylings out of my head).

Sounds like you should get a new XP CD
I know that my machine boots very slowly form the CD with my XP cd, slower than any other machine I've used before. I've no idea why as the drive is fast once XP is loaded. Must be something do with these drives.
You could try booting into your current Windows and then run the setup from the XP CD in Window. I'm not sure if this option will let you do a repair or not, and now I'm stable again I'm not gonna try it....Sorry...
Have fun and may Sager get a move on fixing this problem that should never have occured in the first place. It looks like te HT BIOS wasn't very well tested.
I paid a lot of money to get the HT processor and I would like to be able to make use of it.
