Laptop screen doesn't light up

Thread Starter

I have an Inspiron 1521. The screen is dark, though I can still vaguely see that it is still displaying if you look closely. I'm guessing the LED backlight isn't working. I was going to recycle it so I reinstalled Vista. Through the whole process, the screen worked just fine. I turned off the computer, now it doesn't work anymore.

What would be the root cause, a bad wire or short somewhere? Moving the screen around doesn't seem to help. Is there a way to fix this easily or should I just get rid of it?

Thanks,

scojo

Does it work with an external monitor?

Yes, the external monitor works. But it's not worth it to us to have a portable computer that can only be used with an external monitor.

Good, this means that the vid card still works. So the issue can be narrowing down to inverter, back light or a LCD. I'd start with the inverter first since it is cheap and easy to replace

Hi

Yes if the external monitor is working fine , it does mean that the video card is working fine.

To further Troubleshoot it , You can try LCD bist as it works for all the dell laptops: Shut down your system and then Hold the 'D' key down and press the power key to turn the system on. It will show different colours across your screen.

If you see the colours well and bright. Then it is a drivers issue which you can get resolved by goin online to the Dell website where you will find the updated drivers ( http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19 ).

If the colours are still dim, then you must consider replacing the screen.

If you need further assistance , Feel free to reply to this post.

Thanks
