New FS Amilo A1630

Hi,
what do you guys think of this Fujitsu Siemens' new Amilo A1630?
Some specs:
• AMD Athlon 64 3400+
• 512MB
• 60GB or 80GB
• 128 ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 Pro
• DVD+RW+R
• 15.4" WXGA TFT Widescreen (1280x800 Pixel)
• WLan 11g
• WinXP Home

I guess nobody has yet been able to test it anywhere, but what do you think about the specs?
Is it good to play newest games (FarCry etc.)? And in the future too?

Thanks!

2 downsides for me is AMD & wide screen, i assume it will be pretty thick and battery life is so-so, but for games it will be great especially with fujitsu screen.

I forgot to mention, that I would use the laptop almost only at home, so I don't care so much about batterylife or weight etc...

ANy Idea...

Any idea what the battery life would be like on this? Is this thing using a nasty desktop processor is this a notebook-specific CPU?

My fujitsu P5020D did 1280 x 768 and thats on 10.6" screen.

Argh!

Yet another laptop I'd like to consider for purchase... that isn't available in the US!!!

I've pretty much religated myself to getting an e-Machines M680x series notebook.

I plan to be running Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Personal Edition on it. I'm also going to be doing a good deal of other graphic design work, for which I'd much prefer to use a Mac (Studio MX, Photoshop, and Illustrator), but finances don't permit me to spend the money to own two machines.

Bah!

I can understand widescreen, but why is AMD a downside for you?

Found it on a german site:

1599 Euros -> so probably priced about the same as the Amilo D 1840

Mikro Anvika has it on preorder for 1199 GBP...

OMG!! Comon why dont they sell it to US??? Why did they always decide to forget the revolutionary ppl who are in need of good-foreign aid instead of Dell or HP????
Why is AMD a downside? Many laptop in this power class use P4s and P4Es which get half the battery life of an A64 if your doing absolutely nothing. If you compare it to a PM, thats a little different, but keep in mind that PMs are 2/3 as fast as this computer, if that. GO AMD, DOWN WITH INTEL !

Spec sheet says 1.5 hours battery life. WTF??? Are they running it off a D-cell battery? for an AMD-64 with PowerNow, that's horrible!

batt. life on my sig below maxed at ~3.5hrs using x-bit lab's battery eater pro, classic mode 800x600 ... altho 800mhz can't compare to banias/dothan on battery power, it's fast enough for everything but gaming.

most P-M gets ~4 - 5 hrs on batt. life, correct?
Wow didn't see that, that is horrible. Battery life should be about 3 hours. Even with 1.5 hours though, it still beets many P4s !!

But if you play graphic intense games, does it relly matter much what CPU you have? The big powerdrain while gaming must be the GPU and screen also the CPU will in games run at max power no matter the ratings and how low it can go. Is the P-M and _Mobile_ A64 max power that diffrent? Say you play Far Cry with a Mobile A64 2800 / Radeon 9700 128 and the same with a P-M. Total powerdrain for a similar laptop per minute should be prett equal, or am I figuring this wrong?

Just trying to make common sense...

AMD being a downside?

The spec sheet says 2.5 hours for the Amilo D 1840 which is P4... either they are being more honest or the 3400+ is one thirsty momma...

dunno why they don't use a 12cell batt in it though, could squeeze a decent amount of life out then....
