Vice president of Asustek Computer's Open Platform business Jackie Hsu, has commented on the company's expansion plans and quick growth, saying that the biggest issue that Asustek is facing in the processes is lack of talent, and the company has already started to aggressively cultivate experienced staff.

Asustek recently opened 500 vacancies for product R&D, marketing and sales and is hoping the new blood will help bring new innovations into the company.

As for the competition, Asustek is adopting a strategy to differentiate itself from competitors, and in addition to the unique products, marketing to create differentiation is also important, said Hsu, adding that differentiation can boost a company's competitiveness and Asustek's Eee Pad Transformer tablet PC designs are good examples.

Seeing that Apple and Samsung Electronics are quickly rising in the IT industry, Hsu pointed out that both companies are respectable competitors, especially Samsung as its success in vertical integration as well as interesting ideas and strategy can all be learned by Asustek and other Taiwan-based players.

Wow! So companies are coming around and back to the good old days of building in-house talents and not racing for the bottom in cost cutting.

What's interesting to me about that is Asus has typically been one of the more innovative companies in terms of developing new and different products. In my opinion, their biggest problem seems to have been strengthening their supply chain when they have a hit. Almost every time they hit on a really popular product, there are supply shortages so not everyone who wants one can get it without having to wait another month for supply to be re-established.

I think that it has a lot do with cost control as far as letting supply chain slipped. Many manufacturers are in the same boat at the moment in that they cannot commit to buy enough from suppliers. And suppliers are getting smart by demanding a concrete number of orders. Gone are the days of suppliers making extra parts in anticipation from manufacturers expected sale figure.

cheers ...
