MS2274 Stuck in Sleep Mode

Thread Starter

I have the Gateway model# MS2274.

The problem that I am having with this laptop is that it is stuck in “sleep mode”.

Here's the story:

I just finished checking my email and “X” out of my web browser and had my desktop showing. Then, all I did was close the lid and went out to mow the lawn.

When I came back in and opened the lid and pushed the power button to get it out of sleep mode, it didn’t work (but the power light was still on and i could hear the fan on).

I then unplugged it from the power supply and took out the battery. (I took a shower) then came back and put the battery back in and plug the power back up and tried to power it back up but it powered up to sleep mode.(The power light was on, and I could hear the fan running).

I then took out the battery and unplugged the power from the laptop and then push and hold the power button for 2 mins and then plugged the power back in (with out the battery in) the laptop and pressed the power button and it was still in sleep mode. (I could hear the fan running still and the power light was on)

I can power it off by holding the power button for 5 seconds and then power it back on, but it is only powering up to sleep mode. I believe I have a bad switch or magnet that activates and deactivates the laptop lid on open and close. I just need to get the switch “turned on” (activated) so that Windows7 can start back up. Once this happens I can go into Windows7 settings and change the default setting for the laptop lid when it is closed to “do nothing” (So that it doesn’t go into sleep mode on close)

I do not know where the switch is located nor do I know how to get the laptop screen taken apart without breaking it.

I am looking for help on how to get it out of sleep mode.

Can you remove the ram and the hard drive, then reconnect them? Any possibility of an external monitor?

@qhn

I took off the bottom cover and removed both memory cards and hard drive and then re-inserted them and still have the same problem.

The reason why I know that I have some sort of bad switch is that this happened a few days earlier but I managed to get it out of sleep mode. (at the that time I didn't know that it was stuck in sleep mode, I though that my hard drive was about to go) I got it out of sleep mode by opening and closing the lid about 200 times before it woke up.

Can you get into BIOS screen before the system accessing the hard drive?

Negative.

Take the hard drive out, leave it out, start the comp and see if BIOS screen comes up. Also try this step with an external monitor plugged in.

No luck.

I took out the hard drive and power up the laptop but it's still in sleep mode. Only thing different this time is that the fan doesn't come on with the hard drive out. The power lights come on though.

Last ditch effort is to try to boot up the system from an installation disk.

That is the first thing that I did.

The problem is...

by it being stuck in sleep mode, it will never follow the boot sequence so it will never make it to the DVD drive to even boot from the OS disc.

What I need is to know where the switch or magnet is located on this model so that I can tinker with it to get it out of sleep mode.

I need to know how to take off the laptop screen as if I were changing it to find that "open/close switch or magnet.

Also,

Now that I put the HD back in and now when i try to boot up, the fan only goes on for a few seconds and then cuts off. But all the lights are on and active. Power light, speaker volume up and down lights work and so does the lock key pad light. (They all still work)

Search the net for Gateway N53 N series service guide. Sorry I can't attach the file for you due to Huddler inept handling of certain files hosting.

I did that last night. (downloaded the PDF file from Gateway and saved to to Google Docs)

You can view it here.

Cool. Good luck with the stuck LCD switch. I do hope that it is the cause.

Thanks,

I am almost positive that it is the lid switch/magnet.

Actually, the manual has a trouble shooting guide on page 130 of the document that suggest that I check the magnet to make sure that it is in its "holder".

But it doesn't tell me where the magnet is located, it just has directions on how to take apart the LCD to get to it.

Gateway NV53

Well,

Took apart the CPU to find the "magnet" and I wasted about two hours doing it the way the owner manual said to do it.

All I had to do is pop of the 4 rubber screw covers on the front of the LCD and then take out the four screws that are hiding there.

Once you do that, all you have to do is carefully pop off the front LCD plastic cover and once you get that off, you can see the magnet on the left side of the LCD metal case just above the CPU lock hinged.

The Owners manual had me take the battery out, the cover underneath, un-plug the wireless card and take out. remove the top cover about the keyboard, remove the keyboard and then remove the LCD off of the hinges and a whole bunch of other steps to take apart the LCD to locate the cover.

So I am back to square one with a non-working laptop.

So the magnet was not the cause? You have nothing to lose, try baking the motherboard.
